By: Eric Fawcett -- August 17, 2025 Xaivian Lee got into some live action this past week as he competed for Canada in the Global Jam, a small exhibition tournament in its third year that features an under-23 roster from Canada, one team from the NCAA, and two other under-23 international teams. In past seasons Canada’s roster has been largely low-major players as well as Canadian university players (USPORTS) but this year they flipped the script entirely and had a roster of all D1 talent, with many of those players being the top shelf of Canadian talent such as Lee. Good report. I imagine the Georgetown game will be the best comparable for his upcoming opposition. Across three games, Lee averaged 7.3 assist against 2 turnovers, which is a great ratio.
I watched highlight videos of the games. Eric's comments about Lee's defense are spot on Fland is supposed to be a decent defender but isn't very stout. It will be interesting to see what the coaches draw up to compensate for their shortcomings.
I watched a lot of Canada's game against Georgetown. I would say that Lee's main deficiencies on defense were staying in front of his guy and fighting through screens, at which Georgetown was really good at setting. On the other hand, Lee wasn't good on D but wasn't horrendous either. Just okay. Pretty much like Clayton Jr.'s defensive shortcomings as a junior. Fortunately, we have four erasers in the interior. On offense, Lee was a better ballhandler and passer in this game than anyone on our national championship team. Remarkable. He also has a gear shift similar to Clayton's. And Fland is supposed to be just as good.
