Joey Belle wasnt bad either... Heres a wild one. When Nolan Ryan recorded his 308th win, who closed out that game for their 308th save?
There were seven boys in the Boyer family. All seven of them played professional baseball. How many of them played in the MLB?
Nolan Ryan was the only pitcher to face the last three single season home run leaders….Roger Maris, Mark McGwire, and Barry Bonds. How many home runs did they hit off of him?
I'm guessing another brother played a few years in the majors but probably before my time. WAG is that the other brothers all played minor league ball. At one time I did have several of both Ken and Clete's Topps cards. Clete was a Yankee then and Ken was a Cardinal.
Everybody remembers Orel Hershiser besting Don Drysdale's scoreless inning streak. But whose streak did Don Drysdale best? It's not Nolan Ryan. LOL.
You are correct—the oldest brother Cloyd, had a short career in the MLB. And all the other brothers played professional baseball.
Good guess but not correct. A hint. His career spanned both the dead and live ball eras. And he had another pitching record that lasted even longer.
Not really a question, more of a funny baseball story— One time Tommy Lasorda asked Pedro Guerro after watching him play 3rd base for a while “Pedro, what are you thinking about while you’re playing 3rd base?” Pedro thought for a minute and answered he was thinking about two things. Lasorda responded Ok, what are they? Pedro answered “1-please don’t hit the ball to me” and “2-don’t hit the ball to Sax either”.
With Cy Young out of contention and your hint added I would be inclined to say Walter Johnson, if not him I really don’t know.
Bingo! I knew some old timers that saw Walter Johnson, Bob Feller and Nolan Ryan pitch. By eyeball they said that Walter Johnson was the fastest and that says a lot. Night Train is the only really old guy in the 3000 K club. He pitched for most of his career in an era that wasn't free swingers trying to earn Cadillacs with the fat part of the bat. Thank you Ralph Kiner for your quote: "Home run hitters drive Cadillacs and singles hitters drive Fords."
