We had to stop dodgeball even when I was in school because a few kids could destroy you. But we did that one where you rolled the ball from the side at players trying to make it across the basketball court end to end. Had to throw underhand and couldn’t hit above the waist but I loved that one.

We also had to stop playing volleyball because we had a dude who went on to play professional baseball hit a laser into a girl’s face that broke her glasses that gave her a nasty cut and swelled her eye shut in like 20 seconds. It sounded like multiple gun shots, his strike, then the ball hitting her, and a crack from the glasses. Gotta admit that one was legit traumatic to just witness, and obviously for the girl. I still remember her full name, for this singular moment decades ago.

Ha! Actually maybe even worse: they are basically sit-ups. Really, more like crunches. I saw CNN’s poll nerd trying the test although he did what I would call a full sit-up. He failed the V stretch but passed the rest. And he looks like he may actively be trying to achieve Peak Weakness.

One of the coolest things from being a teacher was giving the kids time outside. Structured but loose enough to allow the kids to figure out the social dynamics. Once a kids feels safe to fail and to just enjoy the activity.. it’s a blast to watch them become a cohesive unit.
I truly belief many things cannot be taught in the classroom but must be learned in the playground/field/gym.

    Hahaha
I had some parents complain about dodgeball… and we used the little super soft foam dodgeballs.. not volleyballs like we used as a kid.. anyway, I organized a parents vs kids dodgeball tournament to raise money for breast cancer… it was awesome and we never had another complaint. Parents loved playing and realized just how soft the dodgeballs were and what a great workout it is.

My school does a teacher vs. student dodgeball tournament with the soft balls. The ones in my day were the hard red rubber balls you’re alluding to. That guy that spiked the girl was a pitcher in the Braves farm system after HS. He could throw those things almost as hard as a baseball.

He would also pass basketballs like that, and he’d do it every game. He’d inbound one or get a rebound and then wait for you to get downcourt and casually throw you a pass that you could literally hear. Most would not even attempt to catch them.

There was about 15 kids in my subdivision and we were all +/- 2 years in age. Before we discovered sex, drugs and rock 'n roll as teens, we would play baseball, basketball and football all year long. This was back in the 70s and 80s.

True. In elementary school I’d usually pass the PFT in those early years- and I could do a lot of pull-ups because I was a swimmer.

I remember one time after doing the sit-ups the next day I could barely eek out the required minimum 6 pull ups because my abs were on fire - I literally fell to the ground after the 6 pull ups practically in tears

I am good with reinstating this, but isn't Trump doing this akin to Stevie Wonder leading the crusade for eating more carrots to help vision?

it seems inconceivable that I still have this. from 5th or 6th grade.

edit. if the got rid of it in 2012 that means my 23 yo son or 21 yo daughter may have gotten this. I seem to recall getting a patch, not a sticker. that would track with it still being around...I am not an organized person. Cleaned out an old backpack last weekend to take on a trip & found 350 Euros & $180.

Makes sense. The brain is highly engaged when the body is in motion (see proprioception). This activity relates to music in some ways, as music is so closely related to/involved with movement. Good on you for taking your students out and getting them engaged in unique ways.

I think part of the rationale behind the modern dodgeball cancellation is that it's an exclusionary game. If you get hit, yer out and don't get to play. Naturally, this impacts the least gifted athletes to a greater extent. Can't say I'm totally on board w it, having played a great deal of dodgeball in my life, including my time working at Rec centers in Hillsborough Co. Just sharing w you what one of my PE teacher friends said.

I hated those liver-colored rubber balls, they hurt like heck! Dodge ball was just an excuse for the stronger kids to pound on the weaker kids in a sanctioned activity.

It’s trickier than one would think. Every 35 students I have some that use wheelchairs or have severe allergies or are in what I call “crutches season” (injured, I have spent a decent amount of life on crutches) or going through a terrible life event (a parent has died, etc.) And a hundred different one-offs you would never dream of until here it is. Example: a student told me she couldn’t go outside because her brother was recently ravaged by a pack of dogs in a park, she saw it, and was terrified of open spaces. Ha, wha?? Turns out that was 100% true. I of course didn’t clown that like I just did in that explanation, even when I suspect they are FOS I still honor their requests. Either it’s actually true, or they are covering for some other sitch they don’t want to tell me. Because frankly, it’s none of my business.

Also had a “parent” literally roll up while we were on the girls softball field, right beside a parking lot accessible from anywhere, yelling at the kid to come NOW, and we had a big standoff. I don’t know who this person is, and the kid wasn’t immediately reacting. And this dad looked impressively young. The kid was super timid about it and I and the parent were going at it. I had done all the notifications so my AP knew where we were and showed up mid-argument. It was her brother, and their parents were in a car wreck (all good in the end.) After the fact he came and talked to me, said he was panicking and thought the fastest way to get things going was to say he was the dad. She said she hesitated because her brother was yelling about being her dad. It was immediate chaos that no training could envision.

Just saying taking even a single class outside isn’t Leave It To Beaver simple.

40 years ago absolutely. But even way back when I was teaching we had Jedi dodgeball… one dedicated “Jedi” had a pool noodle and could “heal” fallen teammates by tapping them with the pool noodle. The Jedi had to be quick and smart about how when he approached a teammates and team mates that were bold/reckless often ended up way to far into the other sides territory… but it changed the game for the better. Everyone could stay in a long long time. Well .. until the Jedi got sniped!

If you aren’t using a wrench when playing volleyball then you’re just soft.
