Apparently President Trump signed an executive order addressing college sports yesterday: President Donald Trump signs executive order prohibiting 'third-party, pay-for-play payments' to athletes It seems to me that in the short term it might introduce even more chaos than currently exists.
The biggest thing for me, now that college football is paying players is that NO school should call these student athletes employees. And that's huge, IMHO.
I agree but absolutely “nothing about this whole portal/NIL has been handled well. At this point the genie is out of the bottle and there’s no getting it back in. This is just politics as I seriously doubt anything comes of it.
The only realistic option would be legislation that essentially made the NCAA a federal agency with full regulatory and investigative powers. That would nullify the effect of the court orders that permitted NIL and at least get us closer to the idea of one set of rules for everyone. I see all of the downsides to that, too, but it certainly would beat the current situation.
This will be litigated and the track record is not on the side of the NCAA. As long as the NCAA doesn't have anti trust protection, they will continue to lose the compensation battle.
If there’s any way they could make the NCAA even more messed up than it already is, making it a government agency would be it.
I have trouble trusting the NCAA to fix and/or manage anything. I still can’t look the other way after what they did to Pell and Hall.
I hope we can do that one day. 6, 5, and 7 wins is rough. We aren’t asking for championships just to have some fun again.
Possibly. But self-regulation has clearly failed. I’ll bet there was a time when we thought we didn’t need an FAA because we could trust the states to have uniform regulations and for the airlines to work things out between themselves.
