Just got back home. We did some fishing in the streams in Hoonah and caught several humpy salmon, Dolly Varden and cut throat trout. We had a brown bear cross the stream no more than 30 yards from us! Very exciting stuff. Saw whales and seals chasing the salmon. Alaska exceeded our expectations.
Leaving for Alaska, Thursday to visit my son, daughter-in-law (and brand new baby girl). They’re doctors (she’s Air Force) and July’s always the most hospitable time to visit (still have to dress in layers). The scenery is gasp-worthy, but I can see why US News and World Report lists it the 50th most livable state. But son and daughter-in-law are well paid, with good jobs and a warm social network to boot.
At this point, I'd go just for the weather change. That was my favorite thing about San Francisco when I went a couple years back. March in July.
My second favorite thing was just driving around and that constant sense of Deja Vu you get from all the movies and TV filmed there.
During the early part of the pandemic when there were no tourists and the streets were pretty much empty, we used to drive into The City all the time. We must have driven down Lombard at least fifty times over a couple of months . Usually, there is a long line just to do it once.
I recall once making a thread about a cool place out west and then a bunch of randos started talking about some nasty, libbie city stuff.
So, any mention of SF just makes you mad? Even if we're talking about stuff like. . . Dirty Harry shooting locations? Wow! Just. . . wow!
