Wild stuff. I don’t go to church for my pastor to tell me who to vote for or who will serve my political interests. We have crossed the rubicon of no longer having Freedom of Religion. As an aside, I read this like Billy Long doing a cattle auction. Made it more entertaining. https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.txed.232590/gov.uscourts.txed.232590.35.0.pdf
I am very religious and very vocal conservative. However! Church is for worshipping the Almighty. My service to him. Not politics. Hate this garbage.
I'm good if they just selectively target the mega churches who insert themselves into the political arena.
The issue is that, if you’re playing fair, you would also have to target (or the next GOP administration would be justified in targeting) black churches (which are one of the centerpieces of Democratic get out the vote efforts in urban centers) for the same reason. Next to no one wants both of those things to happen, so it’s highly unlikely that either will.
The problem is that neither the 2017 TCJA nor the 2025 One Triple-B repealed the Johnson Amendment in Section 501(c)(3)… So, we are basically saying the IRS (via Treasury and Executive Branch) is not enforcing the law. That should also hack off a lot of lawyers.
