I saw that highlight but had no idea that was him. Wouldn't surprise me if they make a rule that disallows breaking up double plays like that lol
There is a rule that prevents a fielder from deliberately not catching a fly ball to create a double play opportunity, Many years ago, a Gator 2B- might have been the great Tim Touma- fielded a low liner that reached him a few inches off the clay. Rather than routinely catch it in the pocket of the glove, he turned his hand and blocked it with the back of the glove fingers, then picked up the ball and threw to the SS to start the easy DP. Sadly, he had been too obvious and the umpires called it a catch and an out and returned the runner safely to first. Another of my favorite arcane rules that is totally ignored by umps is that a batter-runner may not move away from first and back toward home in order to avoid being tagged. That doesn't apply when the batter-runner reaches firs and becomes a base runner. Base runners are allowed to return to the last base they safely touched at risk of being tagged.. It doesn't happen often, if you watch bsb regularly, you'll see it. Batter-runner can stop, but can't move backward toward the plate. Usually doesn't matter. but making a fielder chase a batter-runner might allow a runner at another base to advance. I can't say I remember seeing the illegal act- moving backward- resulting in a runner advancing. Maybe it would have been enforced. Jeez, I'm on a trivia roll, so I'll toss out my favorite sports trivia question to use for a bar bet. I learned it 50 or so years ago and no one ever has had the correct answer. There are only two dates in a calender year in which no US major league sports (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, Doesn't inclue women's leagues, individual sports like golf or tennis, or Olympic-type sports.) play a match. Name them. I've kept it to myself for a long time, but I don't want to die of old age without sharing it.
Good question! I couldn’t figure it out so I googled it. I will not post the answer here since I “cheated.“
I’d guess the days before and after the MLB All-star game. The other three leagues are each out of season.
Is there any reasonable probability that Heyman, Shelton or Donay don’t get drafted high enough to make them happy and that they return for next year? I believe that they each have eligibility remaining. If that happened, what would we do with all of these replacements we have been bringing in?
Infield fly rule. Same reasoning that a dropped third strike with less than two outs and first base occupied is an out without a tag or a throw to first.
This wasn’t the fielder, this was a base runner that stopped while running squared himself up and fielded the ball so he would be out and the Tayler may double play could not occur… One of the smartest plays I’ve ever seen!! Announcers were ranting and raving about how smart it was by Surowiec
Maybe someday, but it happens so rarely or the opportunity presents itself so rarely… I think other posters Might be misunderstanding with this young man did. In almost 50 years of baseball, I’ve never seen anything like it, Weather be coaching, playing, or observing I’ve never seen anybody smart enough to do this. Like I said, the situation really doesn’t present itself very much. I saw that on Jomboy Media X/Twitter site.
