So far 20 plus dead and 20 plus girls from a camp missing. Sad for all, can’t imagine the parents horror. In the “old” days I’d wait a while to politicize (if at all), but those days are gone (eg see MAGA response to state reps attack in Minnesota). I wonder if NWS cuts played a role in this tragedy (few inches of rain predicted, almost 18 inches happened).
I don’t know if NWS staffing played a role, depends on who knew what I guess. If the camp didn’t know of impending weather, and didn’t take precautions or even evacuate, then you’d ask why. Maybe then you examine the forecasters. Were any “flash flood” warnings issued? Were they in normal timeframe? I’m not stating anything, just saying those are the questions to answer when it comes to culpability. If they knew of impending weather and the area had a forecast as per/normal (at least just general severe storms/flash flood warnings) but proceeded with their plans anyway, then that shifts blame clearly to the organizers of this camp.
I wonder if they will get the same treatment Arkansas got. Sad that you send your child to camp thinking it'll be good for them and then it takes their life. Prayers for the families of these girls.
At a press conference someone actually challenged the speaker because they didn’t think it should have been a surprise that there were heavy rains and therefore the camp should have taken precautions.
Two dozen confirmed deaths so far. My sister's granddaughter was at that camp two years ago. And it is impossible to imagine the fear the girls' families are experiencing. And all the others along the river. I watched a video of a spot where an RV park had been washed away. A guy said he saw a family of four floating down the river in their RV. I haven't read much yet and don't know what kind of flooding alerts they have, if any, along the river. And, there's no need to politicize this. The actions by a few after the Minnesota shooting were regrettable and not something that should be emulated.
Trust me I wish I didn’t politicize. I believed for long time in the Michelle Obama mantra “when they go low we go high”. But MAGA kept going lower, and a way to get at them is have them defend the indefensible (eg was it really necessary to cut weather forecasters)
The NC floods happened before any defunding occurred. This tragedy has nothing to do with any defunding . But go ahead and double down on your disgusting comments .
It rose 30’ in an hour. Just insane. I didn’t see what time, but even in daylight, most folks would stare at it not comprehending the danger and then it would be too late.
Weather tragedies happen no matter who’s in charge. I’d think we want to invest more (or at least maintain current funding) to better protect ourselves from Mother Nature. Defunding isn’t direct causation to this tragedy but more funding would provide better resources for prediction and response to weather events.
Obviously you're correct, but we need to have priorities. Trump and other wealthy people wanted more money from a tax cut. If that was important enough to cancel health insurance for appx 11.8 million people, it was important enough to cancel weather forecasting and emergency services!
Extreme weather events including floods, hurricanes, heat waves and wildfires have always occurred. Thanks to human caused climate change they're becoming more frequent and more extreme. The numbers speak for themselves.
Does anyone on Too Woke have any accurate information as to what transpired leading up to the deluge that caused to the flooding? Something more than speculation.
Absolutely disgusting display by the Christians running this camp. This isn't the first time kids were killed there by flooding. This camp has flooded many times before, with a major event having 43 kids swept away and 10 kids dying in 1987. So they expanded the camp and brought in more kids? I can see from the arial photos overlayed on flood maps that at least 9 of their new cabins, built around 2019, are built-in high-risk flood areas.
