15th ranked class with room for another 11 or 12 recruits is doing fairly well, I would say - especially when you consider the talent that is already on our roster at QB, WR, RB, OL and ST. DL seems to be the biggest position of need at this point. A breakout TE would be nice to see, too.
The big picture is we aren’t a football school that should expect titles anymore. That’s just not realistic now.
We may compete for plsyoffs but under this structure, i doubt we can really compete for titles. Looks to me that we just cant afford the top class. Of well, i wouldnt spend my money funding the roster either.
You would have said the same thing about UF Basketball prior to the 24/25 season. While I understand that it sucks for a very small % of teams to literally "buy" Playoff team talent now, that does not automatically guarantee a Championship trophy. It obviously did for OSU last year, and yet, OSU went into the playoffs with 2 losses. Neither Texas or Texas A&M or Oregon has YET to win a national title under the new pay for play rules despite what seems like unlimited budgets. To your greater point, I concede that UF has lagged behind, since the end of the Meyer era, on several fronts: Facilities, creative or bribery cheating for top talent, Board of Regent / UF presidents emphasis on football, top caliber coaches, etc. etc. My general impression is UF is making up ground however, since the Covid nightmare, on several fronts. But using the Jimbo Fisher / A&M example, buying a dozen 5 stars does not exactly guarantee success either. But again, I will concede, as it exists right now, my personal opinion is there are probably only 6 - 7 programs (perhaps less) with any realistic chance to win a National Championship based on the current format / rules / realities. I will also concede UF has not come close to cracking into that top tier in a very long time.
This is getting to be annoying. Flashback memories of Steinbrenner buying everyone in the '80s. Wrong sport I know, but it applies to current situation.
Buying the top class doesn't guarantee winning it all for sure but having the tenth ranked class every year brings me to " so you say there's a chance."
It just means we win a Natty once every ten years................ LOL Just kidding! Although given recent history I would take that deal! Yeah, I'm hoping UF, at the very least, gets in the playoffs this year or next. We are long overdue!
I dunno. Sure, i want to get in the playoffs but just like those silly east banners that hung for a while, backing in and getting boat raced is not satisfying at all. If we have a legit shot at winning a playoff game, thats completely different .we have a legit schedule though, so i think if we can go 10-2, we can beat any tram on any given day. I think napier and the boys will have to do an outstanding job to win 8-9 though. I just dont see it. I want to but i dont. Theres a reason the over under is 6.5 and vegas arent idiots.
Well Wanne, I can't really argue. Now "IF", UF goes 10-2, well I think the Gator DO have a legit shot in the playoffs. Big emphasis on "IF". But given the level of competition expected with this schedule, the Gators, at 10-2 would be battle tested, and if injuries are not severe, yeah, the Gators have a shot. But my O&B glasses are showing, like you say, far greater experts that do the thinking for Vegas have us as barely a +500 team. That's pretty depressing. Of course, Vegas ain't always right...........think UF basketball! One thing for sure, by mid to late Oct. we will all know what to expect. That 4 game gauntlet, Finebaum says we go 0-4 in that stretch, will tell the tale. I have drunk the Koolaide, and think if DJ can stay healthy, we may be the surprise team of the SEC.
I do think that if UF can get in the playoffs, they can win them, but it will not be easy. The most difficult thing to me is just getting in, given our schedule. Even if we only win 9 regular season games, we may not get in but against the schedule we've been giving would be a feat. Having to rely on some shady cabal to pick you as a playoff team that probably hasn't even seen more than a few plays of your games is iffy business.
I think with our talent level and our schedule at nine games would be outstanding and we would probably be better than some of the teams that do get in the playoffs, but we would be left out.
