Completely concur with the depoliticization of ship naming. But the principle has to stand two years from now when if Republicans want to name a ship after, say, Rush Limbaugh. Except for Medal of Honor recipients who never entered political life, no future ships named after anyone who has not been dead at least 50 years.

Yep, not a fan out of politicizing names of warships.
It has a vibe of its more about a political effort, group of people, and politicians with a cause outside the military (even if justified).

Harvey Milk. Was he a sexual predator? Did he like young boys? Rev. Jim Jones enabler?

Yes to all of the above if I had to bet on it

I hope that they kept all of the name placards, because about day 10 of the next Democratic President the The USNS Harvey Milk will be back. There will be no Ft. Bragg, Ft. Hood, Ft. Pickett, AP Hill or any of the other traitor general names who are now synonymous with the traitors of the MAGA cult. We have now entered the age of battling names.

Unless there are changes in law about naming, then you are very likely right. That might be the main lesson here: what one President can do by executive order, another can undo just as easily, and so on. The last President was not really serious about these name changes, so he did not codify them in law. If the current President is likewise not serious, then he won’t either.

And then they will be changed back again in the next Republican Admin since it will then be seen as a requirement to correct the mistakes of the previous Democratic Admin. Meanwhile, the service members will continue to refer to them as their original names since they know they eventually return to them at some point.

Maybe the solution the Army offered originally is the best way to thread the needle and we stop playing stupid political games with the military.

I doubt that the next Democratic Admin is going to change the name of the ship back to Harvey Milk when it is now named after a MoH winner. The optics on that would be absolutely awful.

It’s a shame that now ….. do you an obsession with “wokeness and inclusion” …. there needs to be a law governing the naming of US warships. What happened to reason and discretion?

There is a logical (but not necessarily smart) solution to this. One president will have the brilliant idea to tear down the offending bases and re-locate them somewhere else. That way they can't be re-named. Which, of course will lead to the next president re-locating all of the bases again. We'll be bankrupt in 2-3 administrations.

It seems like the sensible thing would be for a president to propose a new name for a base, and let the voters of the state where the base is decide which name the base should have. If the voters want to align themselves with the Confederacy and slavery, then let them have at it.
