I know that this has been explained several times, but primaries and public elections are not comparable in this aspect because the Democratic and Republican parties are private corporations. Therefore, how they run their affairs is up to them. Until relatively recently, no parties even had primaries. The parties are even allowed to bribe their own candidates if they choose.
