To emphasize your point. When people learn I moved to Mexico, the first thing out of their mouths is,"But is it safe?" because in their minds Mexico is unsafe. We walk through town after dinner and concerts at night with nary a care. Have done it since 2016. Safer than downtown St Pete where we also live. People are going to stick with their baises and look for whatever reinforces them. That is what humans do. We react with our emotions and use rationality to defend them. That is how brains work. It takes effort to overcome ourselves. The VAST majority lack the understanding, fewer still, the ability.

So... Gainesville is more dangerous than Baton Rouge? Maybe we need to clean-up the eastside?

    Is Gainesville, FL Safe?
The B+ grade indicates that the rate of crime is lower than that of the average US city. Gainesville ranks in the 75th percentile for safety, meaning it is safer than 75% of cities but less safe than 25%. This analysis applies only to Gainesville's official city boundaries. See the table below for nearby cities.

The crime rate in Gainesville is 16.77 per 1,000 residents in the typical year. Gainesville Residents generally consider the northwest part of the city to be the safest. Your chance of being a victim of crime in Gainesville varies by neighborhood – ranging from 1 in 43 in the east neighborhoods to 1 in 90 in the northwest.

When looking at total crime counts (rather than per capita rates), the south parts of Gainesville, FL see the most incidents – about 840 per year. In contrast, the southeast part of the city has the fewest, with approximately 209 crimes annually.

My aunt and uncle had a plantation south of michoachan. Totally safe and not a worry in the world. Northern baja isnt as safe as it was forty years ago when i first started going. Several of my friends have places just south of the border and we still go but its not as safe as it was in my opinion.

Of course. I wouldn't go to many places in Mexico, just as I would not go to many places in the USA. But the tenor of people that Mexico is unsafe, or New York is unsafe, or Gainesville is unsafe tend to begin from a little information or prejudices. It is wonderful that you have traveled and can cite from experience.

Its all in where you go no matter where you are. Cartels are different from the 80's. They use to keep the tourist places safe for tourism. Tijuana use to be 18-21party town for San Diego . Its totally shut down now. We go douth of rosarito and stay out of towns, mostly surfcamp types of places and mind our own business but its still a litlle sketch. Im actually more nervous going to Memphis this fall. New Orleans is way worse than it use to be. Theres been a shooting the last three weekends ive been.

Many many years ago I saw a stat that rated Tallahassee as having a higher crime rate than NY. Actually I think Tally had one of the higher crime rates in the US. This was before New York's huge plunge in crime happened in the 90s.
I saw a good breakdown explaining the surprising finding and I'll try to do it justice here...
    • Official police stats don't differentiate between minor crimes and major. So any crime counts against the crime rate.
    • Tally had 2 big universities so more than their share of minor property damage, etc.
    • New York cops didn't bother with minor crimes so those weren't reported.
So while the headline was true (Tally had a higher crime rate than NY) the reality was far from that. It was more a function of college kids and an active smaller town police force trying to keep a lid on things.

Perhaps the same thing is going on with this latest blurb...

I grew up in Gville. Even during Nam and integration, I always felt safe. I'd be the only white guy in Mom's Kitchen or Red's Two Spot. I watched Super Fly at the Florida Theater and in that huge audience you'd have immediately seen me. Had friends from some neighborhoods who'd tell me it wouldn't be cool to come by for awhile. I was cool with that. Times have changed and Gville has too. But you'll never get me to believe that article with its skewed stats that Gville is close to the worst. An accurate article would be about crime in cities with major colleges, regardless of whether it's a college town or just a big city.

Ya'll got it all wrong, the authors of the article were not talking about CRIME, they were talking about opposing fans going home after a swamp butt kicking............and the danger of falling in love with some Gatorette's.

Memphis is not a college town. Think Gainesville or College Station.
