I was in San Diego several years ago and visited the USS Midway which is set up as a museum there in SD. Some of the info provided as various points on the self guided tour was that it's last mission was the first Gulf War. I commented to my friends that they sent it there as it was scheduled to be retired so if they lost it, it wouldn't have a significant impact on the Navy. It seems like you can make the same observation about the Nimitz in this situation.
