Nope, it was Trump and Hegseth leading the renaming. Too easy to google and find plenty of articles that it was them and not the Army. Renaming a base to its’ old name (which was based on a Confederate war general) but using the exact same name but tying it to some unknown solider, no matter how meritorious their service, is just disingenuous and you know it. As for “you were clearly never in the Army,” WTH does that have to do with Trump wanting to reverse the names. I’ll answer for you - not a thing. I prefer the old names too but the tripe you’re trotting out is pure garbage.
Because if you had served in the military you would understand the name of those bases are not really tied to the generals anymore and more to the culture and capabilities of the units stationed there. Unless Democrats thought they would have control of the White House for 20 straight years, changing the names of the bases was always going to result into the names being changed back when a Republican Admin came in.
Assumptions. I fully understand the soldiers that served at these bases when they were named Hood, Benning, etc. remember them by those names. I’ve got no issue with it. Truly personal history and “not hate” for them.
Maybe you’re not picking up what I’m throwing down here. I am in the Army. The Soldiers, generally speaking, never wanted the names changed. When changing the names became inevitable under President Biden, renaming the bases after Soldiers with the same last names but no Confederate history was the first compromise offered by the Army, such as renaming Fort Robert E. Lee for “Light Horse Harry” Lee. If Secretary Hegseth “led the renaming” in this way, it is because he was a Soldier back when this was first discussed and would have been aware of the proposal. For someone who thinks of Trump as a complete dumbass, you seem to be giving him a lot of credit on this one. At any rate, the point is moot. What one President can rename, the next can rename again. That’s what happens when you rule by executive fiat and just hope your party wins the next election. Can the next President just change the names right back again? You bet. But the whole Confederate nonsense won’t be much of an issue next time either. He or she will have to say things like, “But the people loved having a fort named Liberty!” or “The people demand that we have a fort named after a mail lady!”
And that's why I supported the CinC no matter what a butt wipe he may have been. My boss was my squadron CC or my immediate supervisor. I've had good and bad in both departments. Again, for the bitter pills in the back, if I were a Trump worshipper, you might have a valid post. I'm just enjoying the meltdowns here; it's classic. When I'm having a bad day a quick romp through this forum is cathartic—cheap therapy.
You were never in the military is significant to those of us serving and retired. You really have no clue except to run your mouth after consulting Google. You immediately proceed at warp speed to marginalize his experience. No surprise your gears are really grinding trying to understand my post about troops being reenlisted by the president. Run along
Think things have gotten twisted. I never served but my great-uncle died after being mustard gassed in France during WWI. My uncle (mother’s baby brother) survived D-Day but died in a village north of Paris in WWII. My father was in the first occupation forces in Japan after WWII. Probably exposed to radiation, he died at 47. I have immense respect for those that serve. Thank you for protecting me and my family and our freedom. I did work in the military realm in the private sector. Held a Secret Silver security clearance. Worked on SDI (met Dan Quayle) then Patriot missiles. Fire control systems on the Apache. Fuel systems on numerous aircraft (F/A-18). Handheld CT scanner for medics in the field. Various computer systems for NASA and others. Worked with NASA on a problem on the Soace Station and I resolved it. Although I didn’t enlist, I love my country and spent years supporting those who served. I was headed to Annapolis in the early 70’s (was NJROTC Cadet of the Year) when Dad died in front of my eyes. After losing her brother, my sister (died at 14 when I was 8) and then her husband, I wouldn’t leave her. Didn’t support renaming the bases. I’m almost 70 and grew up around lots of Confederate stuff. Just don’t like the way they renamed it for non-Confederate hero’s to “keep” the base names. Seemed cheesy to me. Man up and say “we can honor those that served even if we now disagree with their cause.” I did do stuff to support our country. Never bad-mouthed our troops. My problem is with Trump, who prior to getting elected never did a single thing for this country, pissed on honorable men and women who risked all for me (like my 3 relatives who gave all), got some rich man BS deferment then wraps himself in the flag. Sickens me to see him salute.
I agree renaming the bases using the names of soldiers with names similar to the names of the Confederate generals is probably the the most rationale compromise. I also understand the historic connection with the base names. I still associate Ft. Bragg with the 82nd Airborne, Ft. Benning with the Army's infantry and airborne/jump school and Ft. Bliss which actually wasn't named for a Confederate officer with the Army Air Defense School which apparently has been relocated to Ft. Sill since I attended it in 1974 for the Air Defense Basic Officers course and 1980 for the Advance course.
I hope you’ve managed to keep yourself in good health. Anyone who ever knew anything about air defense is going to be in demand if China decides to press the matter of Taiwan.
Not sure how useful my knowledge of the Hawk and Nike Hercules systems would be today not to mention that I probably forgot most of what I learned. I did have a few classes on the Patriot system although they just provided an overview and I'm absolutely certain the system has been modified and upgraded many times since then. Honestly, I would be more than useless. Adding that I have absolutely no knowledge of the subject I hope we're devoting major R&D resources to defend against drones at the low end and hypersonic cruise missiles at the high end.
I hope your last sentence is not true. In the instant case, we have a bunch of traitors in the administration who are putting the names of traitors back because the military has become familiar with them. I would like to think that there are enough enlightened future Republican presidential candidates out there who would not stoop to this low level.
