I was looking forward to watching some of the AUSL softball games on TV. But that ended tonight in a hurry with the Volts v Bandits game. You don't even know who the batters are or anything about them, because the broadcasters are too busy running their mouths about things unrelated to the game, and conducting one interview after another ("Let's go down to Savannah") in the dugouts, while a graphic of who is batting is only shown once in a while, I guess when the production crew (is it getting paid?) feels like showing one. Next time I'll find something else to do.
The games are being played in different venues around the country to expose the league to new fans. Some may not have ever had a televised event. (Think Sulphur, LA) I can give a pass for the difficulty of broadcasting from these venues. But, with all of their experience, why can they not have the batter's name and game stats on a graphic as they usually do? I can understand interviewing fans in the stands, and short interviews with well-known people, but who in their right mind would have Kim Mulkey blathering on so long? For me, putting up with some less than perfect broadcasting is worth it to grow women's softball.
I 100% agree with that. I just think that ESPN will have a better chance to grow the sport with a compelling broadcast. I think the non-fan who is channel surfing or the casual fan who tunes in because their daughter is on a team is gonna be turned off by such poor production quality and change the channel.
