I understand this sentiment, but I'd like to give a shout-out of gratitude to the French Resistance, who played a crucial role in the war.
The Battle of France was a disaster, but once De Gaulle took over the Free French forces, they were pretty critical.
Most regular Americans love this. We won and we get to celebrate the Army. You others guys can go watch a boy dominate a girls softball league instead.
This one is different and you know it. Tanks rolling down the street? https://www.politico.com/news/magaz...tary-parade-history-michael-schaffer-00402427 David Glassberg, a University of Massachusetts historian who studies American pageantry, says the country doesn’t have the tradition of set-piece national military parades like China, Russia, or even France. “The whole thing with Trump and the reviewing stand, I can’t remember anything like that” in peacetime, Glassberg said. “It’s not something Americans have incorporated into their image. The idea that you’re going to display weapons or tear up the streets with tanks, it’s really rare.”
I’m sure most would like watching a parade. I’ll admit it would be cool to see ww1 tanks followed by Abram’s tank roll by. But most don’t think it’s a good idea and worth the money. With trump in the stands above saluting. Yikes. Not counting the damage 60 ton tanks will do to the roads. Especially when this admin is supposedly making a big deal out of wasteful spending. Americans think Trump’s big military parade is not a good use of government funds, poll shows
Did you actually watch the video to see the tank going down the street in the 1991 parade? Did you see that President GHW Bush was in a reviewing stand? BTW, a reviewing stand is pretty standard in any military parade.
Apparently when this military parade idea was brought up to Mattis in 2017, his response was “I’d rather drink acid”
Brevard county be warned. Spit on us and you will go to hospital and jail, throw a rock and we will kill you stone dead says Sheriff with glee in his eyes https://www.fox13now.com/us-news/cr...testers-who-break-the-law-during-no-kings-day
You need to know what Mattis is actually like in person. His actual callsign is “The Warrior Monk” which describes his lifestyle. His home as a three star had one chair in the living room and just stacks of books surrounding it. His fridge had condiments and very little food. He was a confirmed bachelor for his entire military career. He hated the pomp and circumstance of military ceremonies and loved being in the field. When Sean Spicer asked him to do a Sunday show as SecDef, he threatened to send Lt. Spicer (Sean was a reserve Naval officer) to Afghanistan. I tended to favor Mattis’ opinion on this. However, I never got to do Fleet Week in NYC when I was single and I’ve been told I really missed out.
The fact that they’ve gone so nuts there is one of the reasons I opted not to attend my 40 year reunion. I didn’t think I could take hearing all of the Trump and MAGA adulation.
My 50th is coming up and damned if I'm going. Bad enough I have some of them as friends on facebook, but I ain't ever drinking a beer with those MAGA lovin idiots again.
