If you want to leave the US, then you certainly can. Trump is not stopping you like Gorbachev would have.
I was there as well. I remember him saying the things you mentioned but I think he knew he was going down in history as the Sham to Reagan’s Secretariat and was a little bitter about it.
So, if I don’t support your Orange AntiChrist, if you don’t think like me/ us, if you do not agree with the MAGA mob, then GO? Better idea than that is for you to go read The Constitution of the United States. Or better yet go look up President Ronald Reagan and read some damn history. He was a real model of American values and would speak out against what is happening today. Period.
Common sense says it's true. Democrats failed to deliver the border security they promised if Reagan signed off on amnesty and the result was a disaster. Ed Meese evidently said the Amnesty was 1 of 3 major regrets Reagan had, during a 2006 Heritage Foundation interview (per a post on X). Some say Ed Rollins said it. Kelli Ward repeated Ed's story around the time Rollins was her campaign manager (2018) I think the story was discussed on the immigration website VDare but that site was shut down by Leticia James/lawfare (no charges filed)
The point was not so much that I want you to leave. The point was to get you to think a little bit deeper before drawing parallels between Gorbichev's wall and the wall at the southern border. Historical context matters. People on Gorbichev's side were prisoners. The wall was meant to prevent the escape of the prisoners on the east side of the wall. A prison wall of a communist state and a border wall of a free society are two very different things. In the first case people want to flee the prison walls, but they cannot. In the second case the people inside the walls can leave but choose not to. FWIW, when the New Jerusalem comes down from heaven in Revelation 21 it is described as having “high walls.” That is not a bad thing. Only the people in hell who don’t make it in grind their teeth at the thought of such a wall. Walls when used properly are a good thing because they uphold the rule of law and keep law breakers out. They also provide protection and security from enemies who would infiltrate to do harm to the people who reside in the safety of the walls. Heaven is described as a beautiful city with high walls, and yet people want to call walls communist and anti-Christian. This demonstrates a lack of biblical literacy among people who think they know much more about Jesus, the Bible, and Christianity than they otherwise do.
Understand your point but let me clarify what I meant by “walls”. I was speaking more about trade barriers, tariffs, and this administration’s stance and disposition to our traditional allies, like Canada, Western Europe, Greenland, lack of support for Ukraine, etc. For the record, I am in favor of strengthening the southern border and in favor of legal immigration, including those that were granted amnesty under past administrations, even if I disagree with the decision at the time.
This was just a part of the overall story. The Polish Pope, who had been shot, returned to Poland, and was greeted by something greater than hard-fisted power—pure faith. And then, the Poles, driven by that faith, defied the Communist regime, and started what became the insurmountable exodus and end of the Soviet Union.
Reagan sacrificed the chance to balance the budget and reduce entitlements in exchange for democrat cooperation on rebuilding the U.S. military after Carter neglected it for four years.
How people think they like both Reagan and Trump at the same time shows how little they understand about either.
Neglected is a bit overstatement - although a key campaign point for Reagan. Note Vietnam War ended in 75
Maybe the Cold War was a better option? Assured mutual destruction has a certain effect on the competitiveness of a free American people. An adversarial USSR could have curtailed rogue nations, and kept China in check. The current world feels much more dangerous.
Were you around in the 1960s-70s? Did you live in south Florida during the Cuban Missile Crises? You know that the Soviet Union developed capabilities for North Viet Nam that facilitated the downing of American fighter jets over North Viet Nam.
You made my point. Both those crisis made America stronger. We are 180 now, searching for a rival to drive American identity. We are a weakened nation wearing togas and flip flops retreating in isolation.
