Saw Gorbachev speak at the O'dome in 98 or 99. He showed respect for Reagan but downplayed his influence and mentioned something to the effect that he didn't appreciate the condescension. @GatorRade may have been there. Not sure.

Looking back at my childhood, I just remember the whole world seemed to respect him. I was first able to vote in the GHWB vs Clinton election. Even then it was nothing like today. Reagan had a truly American (and Christian) approach to immigration. He didn't publicly embarrass Russian enemies. He respected his political rivals. He acted like a grown up. Oh I wish. I don’t remember this. But I take his point. We build up these great moments, like “What did you know, and when did you know it?”, but reality is usually slow and much more complex. I still think Reagan was right to say it, but there’s no way the president of Russia is just going to do whatever a US president says in a speech.

True, he is the father of the government philosophy of living past your means. ie runaway debt. but for starters, Reagan would never appease Putin & Russia like Trump does. Putin is invading a sovereign country, human trafficking children and killing civilians and trump is scared of him for some reason. Unlike Trump, Reagan walked the talk, to a fault. Trump is just Reagan unrestrained by a liberalish Supreme Court and Democratic majority. They owe their status and popularity to their celebrity. Reagan would be jealous he didnt have a John Roberts or Alito and a party cleansed of all its squishy liberals. The main difference is Reagan is movies, and Trump is TV, so just slightly higher production values in the movies. If you dont like the state of America today, there are few people more responsible for that than Reagan.

Reading this thread and many others on Too Woke, I realize so many of those active on this site don't remember the Kennedy Assassination, watching morning news reports in school about how many Americans were killed and wounded in Viet Nam, summer of '68, AuH2O and HHH, first walk on the moon and Appollo 13, end of the War in Viet Nam, heck ..... even The Challenger failure. With regard to so many events over the past 60-70 years .... the only "experience" they have regarding these events is what they've read, seen on TV, or been told.
