They won't sell many of those cars in the US with 10% added on the sticker. Either Ford eats it or sells elsewhere. If it hasn't yet been announced, look for Ford to move the Mexico production line back to the US. Honda and Nissan both are doing this to avoid the tariff. True story. We have driven Honda Accords since the mid 1980s. My wife had a Honda assembled in Mexico purchased before realizing it was assembled in Mexico. I had a Honda assembled in Marysville, Ohio. We both agreed my car drove tighter, better, and with less noise. After that purchase, I always kept my eye on making sure our Hondas were assembled in the USA. I wouldn't pay 10% more for any piece of crap assembled in Mexico. Ford will realize this soon enough.
So, if merchants pick up “1/2” of the “extra tax”, who pays the other 1/2? Nothing guaranteed in this life but death and taxes. And I am glad you called it a tax because that is exactly what it is. So who pays the other half?
So now you like taxes? You like to be taxed? Are you under the illusion that this small tax will bring jobs back to the U.S.? Because I think we've proven that the tariff rate will need to be closer to 350% than 10% to make that happen. Do you really think that this will be what balances the federal budget and reduces the federal debt?
If Ford moves the production back to the US which I would concede is likely it still means that US consumers will be paying higher prices considering that for those models currently manufactured in Mexico the cost of production in the US will higher and that cost will be passed on the US consumers. You also stated that tariffs are not inflationary. In the view of the example below concerning the largest retailer in the US you may want to rethink that statement. Walmart warns it will raise prices because of tariffs
For lower cost models they may just eliminate those cars from the U.S. market entirely. Which may even be worse than a mere “price increase” on a like-for-like model as it takes that option off the table.
Framework has been finalized in London subject to final approval of Trump and Xi. London Trade Talks End Just Before Midnight With 'A Framework' “We have reached a framework to implement the Geneva consensus and the call between the two presidents,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told reporters as he left the meeting. In Geneva last month, the U.S. and China reached a preliminary agreement that focused on rare earth shipments from China and reductions of U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods that had climbed above 100 percent. In recent weeks, however, the two countries had come to loggerheads as progress on those measures stalled. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping spoke on the phone and agreed to a new round of talks to restart the process. Important items for both sides will be done simultaneously up front. Winning.
Welp, a 55% tax on consumers for Chinese goods is apparently what winning looks like these days.. Trump will sell it as “billions in revenue” and the cult will eat it up..
2 weeks ago Chinese college students were all spies and now they can once again attend US colleges. What has changed?
