Globally Liberal views include supporting free markets and individual freedoms. Somehow in the US those definitions have morphed. Setting that aside I’ve always found it odd how much of a preoccupation it is with conservatives about being identified as conservative, even thought the definition of conservative seems quite fluid. You don’t really see a comparable desire to be “liberal” or “progressive”. Those are just labels that may or may not fit, but being conservative is an aspiration.
I think it is because conservative is viewed as anti liberal. But while dems dont brag or aspire to be called liberal, they do view themselves as progressive and many use the term to make themselves feel smarter.
Yes. It's why it ticks me off to see the right tripping over this opportunity. The left has an extreme arm with no rival, so instead of offering a rational, conservative, common sense alternative we have thrown Trump out there making the right look as extreme. Good short game? Maybe Terrible long game.
With that, He's been great at putting our country first and fixing all this caused by the extremist on the left. I'm very thankful to have Trump as our President.
No, with that he has lowered himself to their level and beyond and we will pay the piper when they return to power inevitably.
Liberalism is the ideology of Western suicide. When once this initial and final sentence is understood, everything about liberalism - the beliefs, emotions and values associated with it, the nature of its enchantment, its practical record, its future - falls into place. --James Burnham (1964) Modern liberalism, for most liberals is not a consciously understood set of rational beliefs, but a bundle of unexamined prejudices and conjoined sentiments. The basic ideas and beliefs seem more satisfactory when they are not made fully explicit, when they merely lurk rather obscurely in the background, coloring the rhetoric and adding a certain emotive glow. --James Burnham (1964) Unlike liberalism, conservatism is not an ideology. James Burnham excerpt from Suicide of the West pertaining to liberal guilt (which makes it hard for liberals to defend Western civilization):
Partially true. What brought us Trump and I have to give him a lot of credit is his ability to persuade working class Americans without a college education that he really cares for them when in fact he doesn't have an empathetic bone in his body.
So the first time wasn't because of the liberals, it was the second? People liked the liberal agenda until 2021?
Wait, are you saying the liberal agenda is to simply elect black dudes? Because that isnt what I am saying. From wokeness to sanctuary cities to men playing womens sports to a month for everything... The agenda (perceived or otherwise) sunk the Democrats.
What you seem to be saying is that the liberal agenda as presented by Fox News and conservative propaganda helped elect Trump .... I cant disagree with that lol. Yes, I'm sure that helped motivate Republican voters. But Donald Trump also lost an election when that was the "liberal agenda" according to conservatives, so it probably is a bit more complicated than that, and probably has to do with people turning against incumbents .
While those issues weren't really significant the election was so close (Trump won the popular vote by a 1.6% margin and most of the swing states by less than 2%) they could have made a difference. The economy was probably much more significant with voters believing that Trump could lower prices to the level of January 2001 when he left office.
So disagreeing with Trump means you have a mental illness. When do the soviet style re education camps open?
I don't disagree. But we are so equally divided that it likely makes a difference. And while those things are not widespread, sometimes you vote against pouring oil down the slope.
It isnt propaganda at all. It may be the noisy minority, but hardly a fake situation. Again it only takes a few drops of oil to make a slope slippery. (Men in womens sports). The noisy minority are generally ehat we hear the most about on most sides.
I don’t see those on the left striving for an ideological label. It is absolutely true that the far left can be completely intolerant on any deviation on pet issues - such as identity politics, but it is usually issue or cause related (for better or for worse). I’ve seen this in the over 4 decades of following politics. For Republicans there has always been a strand about whether you are “conservative”. It was kind of a minority in the party until Reagan came along. Then it steadily grew. By the time the Tea Party came along it was gaining a resurgence. Here in TX Pretty much any R candidate yard sign or mailer would have “conservative” plastered all over it. It has gotten to the point where you want to be the most conservative running in a Republican Party. That’s one reason DeSantis tacked so hard right in the 2024 campaign. It didn’t work out for him but that’s not the reason why. So if being conservative is a virtue - is being more conservative more of a virtue? Abortion is obviously a hot button issue for many conservatives. Outlawing abortion is viewed as conservative. Also law and order and accountability is conservative. Does that mean arresting women who had ann abortion would be more conservative? How about executing women who have abortion. While those examples seem extreme, that is the result of always striving to be most conservative. I think it was 2020 or 2022 where Democrats successfully toppled a couple of Republicans in the primary to far right nut jobs by putting out fake commercials against the nutjob - “Candidate Nutjob is just TOO conservative - votes for more moderate R candidate instead”. The result was that the underdog nutjob candidate won the primary.
