Is it any wonder liberals are having a mental health crisis?

Mental health is a factor — but rarely the cause
Moreover, the percentage of shooters whose crimes were directly motivated by the symptoms of a mental disorder (such as delusions or hallucinations caused by psychosis) is much smaller: roughly 16%. That is a smaller percentage than shooters motivated by hate, a workplace grievance, or an interpersonal conflict.

“If someone has a mental health history, I think we’ve gotten in the habit of blaming that for their actions,” said Peterson. “But someone can have, say, depression, and it’s not like everything they do is driven by that.”

Nearly All Mass Shooters Since 1966 Have Had 4 Things in Common

    "Conservatives traditionally promote family values"

Trump is in office and yet OP claims this. Stormy Daniels = Family Values.

In fact, they are trying to demonize and deport people who actually have nuclear families

Would you say that "both sides" have legitimate -and outright adjudicated!- criminals at the very top of their leadership positions?

Ok if we have to play this childish “we are better than you game” I submit this

    https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0160289624000254

    Liberals are more intelligent

Polygenic scores predicted social liberalism and lower authoritarianism, within-families. Intelligence was able to significantly predict social liberalism and lower authoritarianism, within families, even after controlling for socioeconomic variables.

Democrats are more educated, especially when limited to white voters.

    3. Demographic profiles of Republican and Democratic voters

The top 20% income bracket leans Democrat.

    6. Partisanship by family income, home ownership, union membership and veteran status

Higher intelligence is associated with higher mental illness.

I view it this way. Many conservatives are similar to children in their view of the world. Highly simplistic, black and white - not a lot of context. Filled with fantasy. If the world is perceived as simple then you are less likely to be burdened with the effects of mental illness.

Reality makes ppl conservative (why the older folks get, the more conservative they tend to become).

The freedom to pursue intellectual fantasy (mostly in our youth), lends itself to liberal ideology, which is, by definition, dislodged from reality.

The mental health issues come from the frustrations of whimsical dreams and visions, crashing against the cold hard truth, of reality.

Both conservativism and liberalism however, are necessary for balance. One leads to improvement by aspiring to be more and better than the known; the other keeps us grounded, focused on productivity, within the framework that is.

Kill off liberalism, and we cease to grow. Kill off conservativism, and we flail and flounder aimlessly and off the rails.

    Cest la vie.

The “grounded in reality” conservatives with a Punisher sticker on their truck? Or that printed up
“Civil War” T-shirts on 1/6/21? That believe things like litter boxes in classrooms or that Haitian immigrants are feasting on household pets?

I get what you are saying, and maybe that conventional wisdom held up 50 years ago. But in the “alternative facts” era to say conservatives are grounded in reality is beyond laughable.

If you're more empathetic to other's situations, even if it doesn't affect you, it will affect your mental health over time.

In this space and time, it's the liberal thinking citizens that have the empathy so it would make sense that liberals are having a tougher time mentally.

For me, I only felt relief after the NC game, not elation or joy.

Yeah, when I encounter old ladies saying things that Alex Jones would be ashamed to state publicly, I dont think the "reality" that is shaping some people is making them 'conservative' in any traditional sense, politically or philosophically. Its making them consider suicide bombing a planned parenthood.

I'm sure I've become more "conservative" because I lament people being functionally illiterate, I read books, I dont get news or information from Youtube or quick hit videos, refuse to use Tik Tok, or Chat GPT to write an email, don't understand anyone under 25, etc. But in political terms, quite the opposite.

Respectfully disagree. I think it is accurate to say that many on the right are no longer conservative. But true conservatism is the proper counterweight to true liberalism.

Ronnie and Tip may be our last examples of the two sides working in a good balance.

And they reportedly liked and respected each other, as did Scalia and Ginsburg. We can disagree and still get along, which is crucial for collaboration.

I think what you define as conservatism, which is mostly Reagan conservatism, was a blip in time. Historically conservatism didn’t really include liberal values, but leaned more authoritarian. Trump is actually closer to a world historical definition.

Well, I dont think conservatives, Reagan for instance, really had liberal views per se, as much as they were willing to listen and try to coexist peaceably.

We have lost that for sure.

Since 1989, which “side” do you think quit listening to the “other side” to a greater degree …. conservatives or liberals?

Also, do you think one side has become more “extreme” than the other? Do we see on side engaging in lawlessness and violence to a greater degree than the other?

Absolutely. "One side" put the power of the federal government into the hands of a criminal, a convicted felon. Almost nothing could be more lawless than that.
