CONWAY, S.C. — Blake Cyr drove in four runs and Aidan King allowed one run in eight innings as Florida stayed alive in the Conway Regional with a 17-2 rout of Fairfield on Saturday.
The Gators — who lost 11-6 to East Carolina on Friday — got a solo home run from Cyr, a two-run shot from Bobby Boser and a two-run homer from Brody Donay on the way to a 7-1 lead through seven innings.
Cyr had an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run single in the eighth.
Florida blew it open with an eight-run eighth inning in which the Gators had just three hits. Fairfield pitchers issued five bases on balls, two of them with the bases loaded, and hit a batter. There was one error in the inning.

“First of all, I want to congratulate Fairfield for a great year,” Gators coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “Obviously, you never want to see your season come to an end, but coming into this thing, we knew they were going to be a really difficult 4-seed. So congrats to them, first and foremost.

    ON THIS DATE
    June 2
1928: Les Bell of the Boston Braves hit three home runs and a triple at Braves Field, but the Cincinnati Reds came away with a 20-12 triumph.

1928: The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1. All the runs came from three pinch-hit home runs.

1941: Lou Gehrig died in New York at age 37.

1949: The Philadelphia Phillies hit five homers in the eighth inning against the Cincinnati Reds. Andy Seminick hit two and Del Ennis, Willie Jones, and Schoolboy Rowe hit one apiece. Seminick had homered earlier in the game.

1959: The Baltimore Orioles-Chicago White Sox game at Comiskey Park was delayed for nearly half an hour as a swarm of gnats overcame the field. Groundskeepers tried using bug sprays and torches, but the gnats wouldn’t budge. A postgame fireworks display was brought in from center field and a smoke bomb was attached to the framework. The gnats left and the Orioles defeated the White Sox, 3-2.

1990: Randy Johnson pitched the first no-hitter in the Seattle Mariners’ history as he beat the Detroit Tigers 2-0. The 6-foot-10 left-hander, walked six and struck out eight while pitching the first no-hitter at the Kingdome, which opened for baseball in 1977.

1996: Houston starter Darryl Kile tied the modern major league record by hitting four batters in a 2-0 loss at St. Louis, and the first to do it in the NL since Moe Drabowsky in 1957.

2000: Tampa Bay’s Fred McGriff hit his 400th career home run, but the Devil Rays lost to the Mets 5-3.

2000: Rick Aguilera of the Chicago Cubs became the 13th pitcher with 300 saves in a 2-0 win over Detroit. Aguilera reached the mark in 614 career appearances, third quickest.

2002: Philadelphia pitcher Robert Person drove in seven runs with a grand slam and a three-run homer in an 18-3 win over Montreal. Person had just come off the disabled list and collected his first win of the season.

2005: Kansas City completed a sweep of the New York Yankees with a 5-2 victory. The Royals, who have the worst record and second-lowest payroll in the major leagues, finished their first three-game sweep of the Yankees at home in 15 years.

2009: Dan Uggla of the Marlins became the fastest second baseman to 100 homers in Florida’s 10-3 win over Milwaukee. Uggla’s two-run shot in the bottom of the second came in his 502nd game as a second baseman, beating Alfonso Soriano to 100 by 34 games.

2010: Ken Griffey Jr. announces his retirement after 22 seasons in the major leagues. Hitting only .184 in part-time duty for the Mariners, he retires with 630 career home runs and six seasons of 40 or more homers. Most of his career was spent with Seattle and the Cincinnati Reds.

2010: Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers lost his bid for a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning on a call that first base umpire Jim Joyce later admitted he blew. First baseman Miguel Cabrera cleanly fielded Jason Donald’s grounder to his right and made an accurate throw to Galarraga covering the bag. The ball was there in time, and all of Comerica Park was ready to celebrate the 3-0 win over Cleveland, until Joyce emphatically signaled safe.

2011: Aubrey Huff hit three home runs and matched his career best with six RBIs and the San Francisco Giants posted a 12-7 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Huff hit two-run homers in the fourth and ninth and a solo shot in the seventh.

2015 — In a memorable major league debut, Rangers 3B Joey Gallo hits a two-run homer in his second at-bat on the way to collecting 3 hits and 4 RBIs in leading Texas to a 15-2 beating of the White Sox.

2017 — Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers records his 2,000 career strikeout.

2018 — Jacob deGrom matches a career high set just two weeks earlier by racking up 13 strikeouts in 7 innings in a start against the Cubs.

FROM MLB's This Day in Baseball History+
1892 At Washington, D.C.'s Boundary Field, Benjamin Harrison becomes the first U.S. president to attend a major league baseball game. The Commander in Chief watches Cincinnati defeat the Senators, presently the last-place team in the National League, 7-4 in 11 innings.

1913 The Yankees lose their thirteenth game without a victory when the Indians defeat the team at the the Polo Grounds, 2-1. The 9-34 club's futility, which sets a franchise record, includes a 3-3 tie to Boston during the 14-game span.

1920 The Cardinals play their last game at Robison Field (renamed Cardinal Field in 1917), their home field since 1893, beating the Cubs, 5-2. Owner Sam Breadon agrees to a ten-year lease for $20,000 annually, allowing the team to share the Browns' Sportsman's Park, and the sale of the ballpark providing funds for Branch Rickey's idea of establishing a farm system, starting with an affiliation of a minor league team in Houston.

1925 At Griffith Stadium, future Hall of Famer Eddie Collins hits a double to become the sixth major leaguer to collect 3000 hits. The 38-year-old White Sox infielder strokes the historic two-bagger off Washington's Walter Johnson, also a future inductee in Cooperstown.

1934 Myril Hoag becomes the first Yankee in franchise history to collect six hits in one game, a major league record of six singles. The 26-year-old outfielder's 6-for-6 performance helps the Bronx Bombers rout Boston at Fenway Park, 15-3.

1939 Carl Stolz's dream of providing a wholesome baseball experience for local boys as a means of teaching the concepts of sportsmanship, fair play, and teamwork becomes a reality when the first Little League game occurs when Lundy Lumber defeating Lycoming Dairy in Williamsport, PA, 23-8. Allen "Sonny" Yearick, a participant in the inaugural contest, will be the first graduate of the fledgling youth league to play professional ball, becoming a farmhand in the Boston Braves organization in 1948.

1939 In a 17-3 win over the Reds at the Polo Grounds, the Giants become the first team to hit five home runs in one inning. Harry Danning, Frank Demaree, Burgess Whitehead, Manny Salvo, and Joe Moore all go deep with two outs in the fourth inning.

1940 Warren Spahn, who will become the winningest left-hander in baseball history with 363 victories, signs a contract with the Boston Bees (Braves). Due to a clash with manager Casey Stengel and his enlistment in the U.S. Army, the 19-year-old southpaw will have to wait six years before he gets his first major league win.

1941 The Giants join the Dodgers and Senators to have their players wear protective headgear. The sewn-in durable plastic liners do not provide a defense against a pair of defeats when the team drops both ends of a doubleheader to Pittsburgh at the Polo Grounds, 5-4 and 4-3.

1944 Baseball cancels today's scheduled eight-game slate due to the Allied invasion of Normandy known as D-Day. The military operation has 60,000 Allied troops, including six minor leaguers who will be killed in action, landing along a heavily protected 50-mile stretch of the coastline in France to fight Germany to begin an offensive assault against Hitler and the Nazi party.

1948 Having accomplished the feat on Opening Day, the Red Sox become the first team to hit three consecutive homers in one inning twice in one season. Stan Spence, Vern Stephens, and Ted Williams all go deep off Fred Hutchinson in the sixth inning of the team's 12-4 rout of Detroit at Fenway Park.

1957 After an 86-minute delay, the first fog out in major league history occurs at Ebbets Field when the umpires call off the Dodgers' game against the Cubs due to extremely poor visibility. The postponement occurs with Brooklyn having a 1-0 lead with one out in the bottom of the second inning.

1958 Ozzie Virgil becomes the first black player to appear in a Tigers' uniform. The 26-year-old versatile Dominican will eventually play every position but pitcher during his nine-year major league career.

1961 Amid a 13-game losing streak, Twins manager Cookie Lavagetto receives a seven-game 'vacation.' At first, team owner Calvin Griffith insists he has no intention of firing his skipper but will replace him with Sam Mele later in the month.

1965 Tom Tresh hits three consecutive home runs when the Yankees blast the visiting White Sox, 12-0. The outfielder's first inning round-tripper is off starter Juan Pizarro, which he follows up with third and fifth frame homers off reliever Bruce Howard.

1968 The day after the assassination of Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy in Los Angeles, Maury Wills refuses to play in a 4-2 loss to the Dodgers, his former team. The 35-year-old Pirate shortstop stays in the Chavez Ravine training room, reading RFK's book,To Seek a New World.

1971 All youngsters attending the Yankee game are given a youth-sized Bobby Murcer model wooden Hillerich & Bradsby Louisville Slugger during the team's annual Bat Day promotion. The banging of the bats in unison by young fans during the late innings of the Bronx Bombers' 5-2 victory over Kansas City, pieces of concrete start to fall into lower levels of the stadium, a harbinger that the Bronx ballpark may be in pressing need of repair.

1978 The Braves select Bob Horner as their first overall pick in the June draft and promptly promote him to the parent club. The Arizona State corner infielder was the first recipient of the Golden Spikes Award, an honor given annually by USA Baseball to the best amateur baseball player.

1986 Padres' manager Steve Boros, before the game against Atlanta, tries to give Charlie Williams a videotape of a disputed play from last night's 4-2 defeat. The ump promptly ejected the San Diego skipper before the first pitch of today's contest at Jack Murphy Stadium.

1990 Stump Merrill replaces Bucky Dent as Yankee manager. During his two-year tenure in the dugout, the former minor league skipper will compile a 120-155 (.436) record before being fired at the end of next season in favor of Buck Showalter.

1991 At Royals Stadium, Ranger left fielder Kevin Reimer ties a club record when he collects five hits, all singles, in the team’s 4-3 loss in eighteen innings to Kansas City. In 1993, the 29-year-old Macon, Georgia native, as the DH, will become just the second Brewer to go 6-for-6 in a game.

1992 Eddie Murray sets a new RBI record for switch hitters, driving in the 1,510th run of his career with a first-inning sac fly in the Mets' 15-1 rout of Pittsburgh at Three Rivers Stadium. The New York first baseman surpasses Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle's 18-year total to establish the new mark.

1993 Cal Ripken suffers a twisted right knee when he catches his spikes in the infield grass during the Birds' 5-2 victory over Seattle at Camden Yards. The resulting swollen knee almost ends the Orioles'Orioles's shortstop historic streak at Game 1,790, 341 contests shy of Lou Gehrig's remarkable accomplishment.

1994 Mike Piazza hits the longest home run recorded in the history of Joe Robbie Stadium when his first career grand slam is estimated to travel 477 feet. The catcher's Ruthian blast, one of four Dodger round-trippers during the Florida contest, isn't enough to thwart the Marlins' 11-10 come-from-behind victory.

1996 John Valentin becomes the 14th player in Red Sox history to hit for the cycle, collecting a two-run homer in the first inning, a triple in the third, a single in the fourth, and a double in the sixth. The Boston shortstop's ten total bases, three runs, and two RBIs contribute to Boston's 7-4 victory over Chicago at Fenway Park.

1997 Sandy Alomar ties the major league record when he hits four doubles in the Fenway Park contest. The Indians catcher's quartet of two-baggers helps the first-place Tribe to beat Boston, 7-3.

1999 Derek Jeter's streak of safely reaching base ends at 54 straight games when the Mets keep him off the basepaths in their 7-2 win over the Yankees in the Bronx. The defeat also marks the end of Roger Clemens' streak of 20 consecutive victories, an American League record.

2000 Thanks to the Angels' video crew playing a clip from the 1994 movie "Ace Ventura, Pet Detective" on the JumboTron, the Rally Monkey is born. With the words "Rally Monkey" superimposed over a monkey jumping up and down in the Jim Carrey movie, the crowd goes wild when Anaheim scores two runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Giants, 6-5.

2002 The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission agrees to drop its lawsuit against the Twins and Major League Baseball. The deal settles pending legal action blocking baseball's contraction plan and removes the Twins from consideration for elimination for the 2003 season.

2003 Major League Baseball suspends Sammy Sosa for eight games, ignoring the Cubs' slugger insistence the corked bat was used accidentally in the Devil Rays' game. Bob Watson, baseball's vice president of on-field operations, agreed the Chicago's outfielder use of an illegal bat, designed to put on home run displays during batting practice, was an "isolated incident," but one that still deserved a penalty.

2006 When Eric Gagne, who will earn his first save in over a year, throws his first pitch to his receiver Russell Martin, the pair become the first All-French-Canadian battery in major league history. The pitcher and catcher each attended Polyvalente Edouard Montpetit High School, one of the few schools in Montreal which had a baseball program.

2006 On the sixth day of the sixth month of the sixth year of the century, the Dodgers score six runs in the sixth inning during the sixth game of the homestand, beating the Mets, 8-5. On 05/05/05, the Twins scored five times in the fifth inning en route to a 9-0 victory over the Indians.

2006 Jason Schmidt, whiffing 16 Marlins during a 2-1 complete-game victory, ties a franchise record for strikeouts in one game, established in 1904 by Christy Mathewson. Also, the 33-year-old right-hander surpasses the San Francisco record of 15 K's set by Gaylord Perry in 1966.

2007 At Petco Park, Trevor Hoffman becomes the first reliever to save 500 games. The all-time saves leader tosses only ten ninth-inning pitches, including an 87 mph fastball thrown past Russell Martin for the final out, to reach the milestone in the Padres' 5-3 victory over the Dodgers.

2008 Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski announces the club is optioning their off-season blockbuster acquisition Dontrelle Willis to their Class A minor league team in Lakeland of the Florida State League. The 2003 Rookie of the Year, who posted a 22-10 record two years later with the Marlins, recently signed a three-year, $29 million deal to play with Detroit.

2008 The Kimberly-Clark Corporation donates 59.59 acres to the city of Hendersonville, a parcel of land that includes the historic Berkeley Mills ballpark. In 2015, the North Carolina city will make an effort to place the storied stadium, once the former home the Berkeley Spinners, a semi-pro mill team sponsored by Berkeley Mills from 1948 to 1961, on the National Register of Historic Places. The Berkeley Spinners

2008 At Turner Field, Brad Lidge gets his 16th consecutive save when Gregor Blanco is thrown out at home plate, dramatically ending the game and preserving a Phillies 4-3 victory over the Braves. The Philadelphia closer's flawless record from the start of the season breaks Al Holland's club mark, who converted his first 15 opportunities in 1984.

2010 The Nationals announce the team is donating the hat Stephen Strasburg wore in his major league debut to the Hall of Fame. The 21-year-old rookie right-hander struck out 14 batters in Washington's 5-2 victory over Pittsburgh.

2013 With John Sebastian's song "Welcome Back" playing in the background, the Seattle fans give Ichiro Suzuki a warm reception when the longtime Mariner legend returns to Safeco Field as a Yankee. The 39-year-old outfielder, who hit .322 during his 12 seasons with the team, was traded to the Bronx last July for Danny Farquhar and D.J. Mitchell.

2015 In the inaugural contest played in MGM Park, the Biloxi Shuckers, coming off a season-long, 54-game road trip, beat the Mobile BayBears, 5-4, in front of a sold-out crowd of 5,065 enthusiastic fans. The Opening Night dramatic 14-inning walk-off Southern League victory marks the first time since 1908, when the Sand Crabs played in the Cotton States League, that a minor league team at home has represented the city.

2017 Scooter Gennett, who was claimed off of waivers by the Reds at the end of spring training, becomes 17th player in major league history, and the first in the franchise's 135 years of existence to hit four homers in a game. The Cincinnati second baseman establishes a franchise record with 17 total bases with his quartet of round-trippers in consecutive at-bats, contributing 10 RBIs to the club's 13-1 victory over the Cardinals at Great American Ball Park.

    Today in Baseball History
    June 7th

1892 Jack Doyle becomes the first player to collect a pinch-hit when he singles, coming off the bench to bat for Cleveland hurler George Davies in the Spiders' 2-1 loss to the Grooms at Brooklyn's Eastern Park. The 22-year-old utilityman will finish his 17-year career going 3-for-5 (.600) as a pinch-hitter.

1906 Christy Mathewson and Joe McGinnity give up 11 first-inning runs, allowing the Cubs to rout the Giants, 19-0. Matty, who is probably still suffering the effects of diphtheria contracted in the spring, retires only one batter while issuing six bases-on-balls in the West Side Grounds contest.

1911 After a two-year absence, having little success as a performer in vaudeville and the movies, Turkey Mike Donlin returns to the Giants. The disagreeable outfielder, traded to Boston after just a dozen games with New York, will compile a .316 average during his comeback season.

1921 Canceling the scheduled Class D Appalachian League game against the Knoxville Pioneers becomes necessary after discovering a girl's body at the Base Ball Grounds in Tennessee, the home of the Kingsport Indians. The police do not want the bloodhounds confused during the investigation of the foul play at the ballpark.

1931 The A's trounced the Tigers, 12-2, in their one-day road trip to Detroit, made necessary by the Sunday prohibition of baseball in Philadelphia. The Tigers score only a pair of runs in the Navin Field contest, stranding 18 of 20 baserunners (12 hits, 7 BB, and one on base by an error).

1936 At Yankee Stadium, Bronx Bomber right-hander Red Ruffing beats Oral Hildebrand and the Indians in a 16-inning game, 5-4. Both starters go the distance, with the 31-year-old future Hall of Famer facing 63 Cleveland batters without recording a strikeout.

1938 In a game against the Red Sox, Indians' pitcher Johnny Allen storms off the mound and doesn't return when ump Bill McGowan orders him to cut off his distracting dangling sweatshirt sleeve. The shirt winds up in the Hall of Fame, but the Lenoir (NC) native, doesn't.

1944 Tiger southpaw Hal Newhouser walks nine in six innings, contributing to the 3-1 loss to the White Sox at Comiskey Park. 'Prince Hal,' a future Hall of Famer, will average nearly 4.5 bases-on-balls per nine innings during the season.

1950 The Red Sox compile 42 total bases in their 20-4 bashing of the Browns. The Fenway fireworks will continue tomorrow when Boston adds insult to injury, beating St. Louis, 29-4.

1954 Dodger catcher Roy Campanella steals home in the top of the 12th inning in a 7-5 victory over St. Louis at Sportsman's Park. Campy had added an insurance run with an eighth-inning round-tripper, but the Redbirds scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score.

1957 Howard University awards honorary degrees of Doctor of Laws to the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and recently retired Dodgers infielder Jackie Robinson. In the coming years, the former baseball great and the Baptist minister will often appear together at Civil Rights rallies, fundraising events, and demonstrations.

1960 In the Cardinals' 9-1 loss to Pittsburgh at Forbes Field, Bob Gibson ties a major league record when he strikes out four batters in one inning, the additional whiff coming from a wild pitch. The fourth-inning strikeout victims include Jerry Lynch, Jim Pagliaroni, Bill Mazeroski, and Don Cardwell.

1966 The A's select future Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson in the first round of the amateur draft, second pick overall. The Mets, with the first overall pick, choose Steve Chilcott, a high school catcher who will never play a day in the major league.

1967 The Reds play their major-league record 11th consecutive one-run game, losing to San Francisco at Crosley Field, 4-3. En route to striking out 15, including fanning Willie Mays four timesCincinnati's 19-year-old fireballer Gary Nolan takes the loss after Willie McCovey blasts a three-run eighth-inning round-tripper, with reliever Bob Lee allowing the decisive run to score in the frame.

1969 The Expos lose their twentieth consecutive game, dropping a 9-5 decision to the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. Montreal's streak of futility falls three defeats shy of the modern major league record established by the Phillies, who lost 23 straight contests in 1961.

1969 Washington's D.C. Stadium is officially renamed Robert F. Kennedy Stadium during a memorial service for the slain U.S. senator at the ballpark. Former NFLer Roosevelt Grier and Olympian Rafer Johnson are in attendance at the ceremony, who each helped apprehend RFK's assassin, Sirhan B. Sirhan, at the Ambassador Hotel.

1970 Vic Davalillo gets two hits during the seventh inning of the Cardinals' 10-7 comeback victory over San Diego at Busch Stadium. The first of the Venezuelan outfielder's two singles comes when he leads off the frame as a pinch-hitter for Bob Gibson.

1972 In the nightcap of a twin bill, the Pirates edge the Padres in 18 innings at Jack Murphy Stadium, 1-0. The winning run crosses the plate due to Gene Alley forcing in a run with a base-on-balls, following Bill Mazeroski receiving an intentional walk to load the bases.

1975 Royals' scout Rosey Gilhousen signs University of La Verne standout Dan Quisenberry as an undrafted free agent. During his ten-year tenure with Kansas City, the right-handed reliever saves 238 games, leading the American League for five seasons.

1982 Joining Lou Gehrig, Everett Scott, Billy Williams, and Joe Sewell, Dodger infielder Steve Garvey becomes the fifth player in major league history to play in 1,000 consecutive games. The first baseman will appear in 1,207 straight games, establishing a National League record, before the streak ends next season when he breaks his thumb in a collision at home plate, playing for the Padres.

1983 Steve Carlton of the Phillies strikes out Cardinals' outfielder Lonnie Smith for his 3,522nd career strikeout to pass Nolan Ryan as the all-time strikeout leader. On the same night, Ryan strikes out three San Francisco batters to finish one shy of Lefty's total but will finish his career with 5,714, far ahead of the Philadelphia left-hander's mark of 4,136.

1986 Amos Otis, who was named the team's Player of the Year three times during his 14 seasons with Kansas City, and Steve Busby, who averaged more than 18 wins a season before a rotator cuff injury shorten his career, are honored at Kauffman Stadium. During the pregame ceremony, the pair is inducted into the newly created Royals Hall of Fame, becoming the first players to be so honored by the team.

1989 For the first time in major league history, the same game is played partly outdoors and partly indoors when the Blue Jays beat the Brewers, 4-2, in a contest that features the closing of the SkyDome's retractable roof in the fifth inning due to inclement weather.

1992 On his 26th birthday, Trevor Wilson finishes his complete-game gem by striking out the side in the ninth on nine pitches in the Giants' 3-0 victory over the Astros at Candlestick Park. The San Francisco southpaw accomplishes his immaculate inning by fanning Jeff Bagwell (swinging), Eric Anthony (swinging), and Rafael Ramirez (swinging), with the third out recorded with the catcher throwing the dropped third strike to first base to end the game.

1998 Dave Burba becomes the first Indians' pitcher to homer in 26 years when he goes deep in a 6-1 interleague victory over the Reds at Cinergy Field. Ironically, the right-hander was scheduled to be the Opening Day pitcher for Cincinnati but was traded to Cleveland for Sean Casey the day before the season started.

1998 After going 6-0 against Atlanta and Florida, the Cubs complete their third consecutive three-game sweep by beating the White Sox, 13-7. The last time Chicago put together a similar streak occurred in 1918.

2001 The Crespos both hit home runs, making it the 28th time in major league history that brothers have gone deep in the same game. In the seventh inning for the Padres, Cesar homers, and his younger sibling, Felipe, blasts round-trippers in the second and the sixth for the Giants in San Diego's 10-7 victory at Pacific Bell Park.

2006 The Rockies, who recorded just ten sacrifice flies during their first 58 games, tie a major league with five sac flies during the 16-9 Coors Field victory over Pittsburgh. The Mariners established the mark against Oakland in 1988.

2007 With the Yankees' 10-3 victory over the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, Joe Torre wins his 2,000th game as a manager. The former Braves (257), Mets (286), and Cardinals (351) skipper becomes the first person in big-league history to have reached the milestone and also have at least 2,000 hits as a player.

2007 With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning at Network Associates Coliseum, Shannon Stewart lines a single to right field to break up Curt Schilling's no-hitter. Thanks to a first-inning home run by David Ortiz, the Red Sox beat the A's, 1-0.

2008 Johnny Damon goes 6-for-6, including a walk-off single, which gives New York a wild 12-11 comeback victory over the Royals. The outfielder becomes the first Bronx Bomber and only the second player to collect six hits at Yankee Stadium.

2012 Starlin Castro becomes the 28th player to collect 500 hits before the age of 23 when he singles off A.J. Burnett with two outs in the fifth inning in the Cubs' 12-2 victory over the Bucs at PNC Park. The 22-year, 167-day old Chicago shortstop reaches the milestone in his 421st major league game.

2014 As part of Wrigley Field's 100th anniversary, the Cubs honor 97-year-old Lennie Merullo, who receives a rousing ovation when he tosses the ceremonial first pitch before the team's 5-2 victory over the Marlins. The former infielder, who went 0-for-2 in three games for Chicago in the 1945 Fall Classic, is the last living person to play in a World Series game for the franchise.

    Today in All Teams History
    June 8th
1909 Cack Henley completes the longest complete-game shutout in baseball history, blanking his opponents over 24 innings in the Seals' 1-0 victory over the Oakland Oaks and Jimmy Wiggs, who also goes the distance during the extra-inning marathon at San Francisco’s Recreation Park. The future Pacific Coast League Hall of Famer’s two-dozen scoreless frames ties three other hurlers for the most thrown by a PCL pitcher in one game.

1920 After a lengthy argument about a questionable call of a ground-ball double over third base with home plate ump Barry McCormick, Reds manager Pat Moran and several players return to their positions to resume the contest. Cincinnati center fielder Edd Roush, growing bored after a few minutes of the prolonged debate, decides to nap on the outfield grass and gets ejected for delay of game when he doesn't wake up promptly.

1927 Tony Lazzeri becomes the first Yankee to hit three home runs in one game, including a ninth-inning blast that ties the game. The round-tripper closes a five-run deficit, and New York beats the White Sox in the 11th inning at the Stadium, 12-11.

1934 The Reds become the first team to travel in an airplane when Cincinnati GM Larry MacPhail flies 19 players to Chicago for a series against the Cubs. In 1946, New York will be the first team to fly regularly, using a chartered Douglas DC-4 that will become known as the 'Yankee Mainliner.'

1939 At Shibe Park, the Yankees use the long ball to rout the hometown A's 22-3. The Bronx Bombers set a franchise record, which will not be tied for 68 years, hitting eight home runs during the contest.

1940 Harry Craft completes the cycle with his fifth-inning three-run home run in the Reds' 23-2 rout of Brooklyn at Crosley Field. The Cincinnati center fielder enjoys a 5-for-5 day at the plate, driving six runs in and scoring four times.

1946 Red Barrett retires the first 22 batters he faces before his bid for a perfect game is broken up with an eighth-inning single by Delmar Ennis. The Cardinals' right-hander gains his first victory of the season with his 7-0 whitewashing of Philadelphia at Sportsman's Park.

1950 After beating the Browns 20-4 with 23 hits yesterday at Fenway Park, the Red Sox set the major-league record for runs scored by one team as they maul St. Louis again, 29-4. Boston's two-day totals set consecutive-game records for hits and runs scored.

1951 White Sox reliever Marv Rotblatt becomes the first pitcher to be driven in from the bullpen when he enters the game in the 8th inning to face the Yankees in a 4-2 loss at Comiskey Park. At present, transportation to the mound is only for White Sox pitchers, but later in the season, the team will provide the visiting bullpen hurlers with a black Cadillac supplied by a local funeral home.

1952 Before starting a twin bill against the Reds, Dodger manager Chuck Dressen tells Cal Abrams that the bench warrior needs to taunt the opposing skipper if he wants to stay with the team. After spending the opener of a doubleheader mocking his opponents, the outfielder is informed between games of his trade to Cincinnati, effective tomorrow, and will need to report to his new field boss, one furious Roger Hornsby.

1955 After only eight games and 13 innings of work, the Dodgers option rookie left-handed pitcher Tom Lasorda to Montreal to make room for a Sandy Koufax. The team's newest southpaw, a bonus baby, comes off the 30-day disabled list after injuring his ankle.

1961 Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock, and Frank Thomas hit four consecutive homers in an inning off Reds' pitchers Jim Maloney (2) and Marshall Bridges (2), making the Braves the first major league team to accomplish the feat. The seventh-inning big-fly barrage, another blast by Mathews, and one by Warren Spahn aren't enough when Cincinnati still manages to win the Crosley Field contest, 10-8.

1961 The day after he graduates from high school, Lew Krausse, who hurled 19 no-hitters and struck out 24 batters in one game, signs with the A's as an amateur free agent for $125,000. Eight days from now, the 18-year-old fireballing phenom will throw a three-hit shutout against the Angels in his major league debut.

1964 The A's ink Jim Hunter for $75,000 after other teams back off in their pursuit to sign the outstanding North Carolina high schooler when his brother, in a hunting accident, blows off his little toe. The youngest of ten children from Hertford (NC) will become a Hall of Fame hurler, better known as Catfish, a name invented by the club's owner Charlie Finley.

1965 In the first major league free-agent draft of students and sandlot players, the A's select Rick Monday, making Arizona State star the first player ever to be drafted. Kansas City will also select his Sun Devil teammate Sal Bando in the sixth round.

1965 As their first pick in the inaugural free-agent draft of high school and college players, the Mets select southpaw Les Rohr, who will compile only a 2-3 career mark pitching in parts of three seasons due to an arm injury the team. Later in the day, New York makes a better choice, selecting future Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan in the eighth round.

1968 Defying commissioner William Eckert's decree that canceled games only in New York and Washington, Mets vote against playing their game in San Francisco out of respect for recently assassinated New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy. When the Amazins' refused to play on the day of RFK's funeral, even under the threat of forfeiting the contest, a decision fully supported by manager Gil Hodges and the organization, the Giants postponed Bat Day at Candlestick Park.

1968 Dodger right-hander Don Drysdale's scoreless streak ends at a record 58⅔ innings when Howie Bedell's sacrifice drives in Tony Taylor in the fifth inning. It will be the Phillies outfielder's only RBI for the season.

1969 The Yankees retire uniform number 7 in front of a crowd of 60,096 on Mickey Mantle Day at the Bronx ballpark. The Mick also receives a plaque from Joe DiMaggio that will hang on the center field fence, and then he gives the 'Yankee Clipper' a similar plaque, telling the crowd, "His should be just a little bit higher than mine."

1971 At Municipal Stadium, Paul Splittorff earns his first major league victory when Kansas City defeats the Senators, 4-2. In 1969, the 23-year-old left-hander became the first player signed by the Royals to appear on the expansion team's major-league roster.

1976 The Red Sox draft Dixie High School (St. George, UT) standout southpaw Bruce Hurst in the first round of the amateur draft, the twenty-second of 24 picks overall. Four of the first five selections, including top pick ASU's Floyd Bannister, are also left-handed hurlers, with the southpaw from Utah recording the most career victories (145) of the dozen hurlers selected.

1977 For the fourth time in his career, Nolan Ryan strikes out 19 batters in a game. The right-hander matches the mark in ten innings of work, with 18 punch-outs during the first nine frames, in the Angels' eventual 2-1 victory.

1979 During the free-agent baseball draft, the Kansas City Royals selected Dan Marino and John Elway fourth and seventeenth. The two future NFL Hall of Fame quarterbacks will never appear in the major leagues, but Elway will play 42 games for Oneonta in the New York-Penn League in 1982 after being redrafted by the Yankees, batting .318 with a .432 OBP.

1986 The Orioles beat the Yankees 18-9 in the longest nine-inning game ever played in American League history. The Bronx ballpark contest, which features 36 hits, 16 walks, and two errors, takes four hours and sixteen minutes to complete.

1987 Angels' hurler Don Sutton (312) loses to Phil Niekro (314), who throws seven and one-third scoreless innings for the Indians in a 2-0 win at Anaheim. It is the third time this century, occurring during the past two seasons, that two 300-game winners have started against one another.

1989 After the Pirates take a 10-0 lead in Philadelphia by sending 16 batters to the plate in the first inning, Pirates' broadcaster Jim Rooker announces if the Bucs lose the game, he'll walk back to Pittsburgh. True to his word, the radio by-by-play man organizes a charity walk from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh after the season when the Phillies' come back and beat the Pirates, 15-11.

1989 Steve Jeltz becomes the first player in the 106-year history of the franchise to homer from both sides of the plate when his two round-trippers help the Phillies overcome a 10-0 first-inning deficit to beat the Pirates at Veterans Stadium, 15-11. The switch-hitting shortstop will hit only five career home runs during his 1,749 big-league at-bats.

1993 After serving as Milwaukee's mascot from 1973 to 1984, Bernie Brewer comes out of retirement after an eight-year absence. Once renown for sliding into a mug of beer after hometown homers, the mustachioed costumed character is brought back by popular demand when the fans vote for his reinstatement by an overwhelming 21,751 to 1,389 margin.

1996 With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and LSU down by a run, Warren Morris hits the first-ever College World Series-ending walk-off home run, giving the Tigers a dramatic come-from-behind 9-8 win over Miami. The second baseman, who missed 39 games this year due to a broken bone in his right wrist, hadn't hit a round-tripper this season.

1997 En route to a 2-0 shutout of the Tigers, Mariners' southpaw Randy Johnson strikes out 15 batters. The Big Unit's performance marks the 74th time he has reached double digits in punch-outs in his career.

2001 The two Texas teams play one another during the regular season for the first time in major league history. The Astros beat the Rangers, 5-4, in the first game of the Lone Star Series played in Arlington, Texas.

2001 Damion Easley becomes the ninth player in Tiger history to hit for the cycle and the first Detroit player since 1993 when Travis Fryman accomplished the feat. The New York City native's eighth-inning triple to right field completes the deed in the 9-4 victory over the Brewers.

2001 In front of a record-setting crowd of 45,936 at the new Comiskey Park, the White Sox beat their North Side rivals in ten innings when Carlos Lee hits a two-out walk-off grand slam to give the Pale Hose a dramatic victory over the Cubs, 7-3.

2001 The Mariners establish the franchise's longest winning streak, collecting their 15th straight victory. The eventual AL West division champs' record improves to 47-12 after the team beat the Padres at Safeco Field, 7-1.

2005 The Phillies trade corner infielder Placido Polanco to the Tigers for right-hander reliever Ugueth Urbina and utility infielder Ramon Martinez. A two-time All-Star closer, Urbina will become the setup man for Billy Wagner in Philadelphia, and Polanco will become the starting second baseman in Detroit.

2005 Going yard twice in his 4-for-4 day, Alex Rodriguez becomes the 40th and youngest big leaguer to hit 400 career home runs. On the 316th day of the 29th year of his life, the Yankee superstar third baseman, who surpasses Ken Griffey Jr. for the honor, connects for a solo shot off Brewers' southpaw Jorge De La Rosa in the eighth inning for the milestone marker.

2007 In the third inning of a 10-3 loss to Boston at Chase Field, Julio Lugo tags out a surprised Alberto Callaspo, taking a lead off second base. The Diamondbacks' baserunner is the victim of the hidden ball trick when he doesn't realize the Red Sox shortstop had never returned the ball to the pitcher.

2007 With their 3-0 victory over Detroit at Comerica Park, the Mets begin a span of 18 games to become the first team in baseball history to play six consecutive series against six different clubs that all participated in the previous playoffs season. During the stretch, New York will compile an 8-10 record while playing against the Tigers, Dodgers, Yankees, Twins, A's, and Cardinals.

2008 Rich Harden begins the game by striking out the side on nine pitches in the A's 7-3 victory over the Angels at Oakland's McAfee Coliseum. Maicer Izturis, Howie Kendrick, and Garret Anderson all go down swinging in the 33-year-old right-hander's immaculate inning.

2010 The much anticipated major league debut of Stephen Strasburg lives up to its hype when the 21-year-old whiffs 14 batters in seven innings in the Nationals' 5-2 victory over the Pirates. Baffling Pittsburgh with a mix of 100-mph fastballs and devastating curves, the right-handed rookie's strikeout total is second only to Houston's J.R. Richard, who fanned 15 Giants in his 1971 debut.

2010 Tim Wakefield tosses 7.1 innings in Boston's 3-2 victory over Cleveland at Progressive Field to become the Red Sox's all-time leader innings pitched. The 43-year-old right-handed knuckleballer surpasses Roger Clemens, who had established the mark during his 13 seasons with the club by throwing 2,776 frames.

2010 At 20 years and 212 days, Mike Stanton becomes the second-youngest player to debut with the Marlins, with Miguel Cabrera remaining the youngest by 149 days. The rookie right fielder's impressive debut, 3-for-5 scoring two runs in Florida's 10-8 loss to Philadelphia, is overshadowed by the much-anticipated start of Washington's Wonder Boy, Stephen Strasburg, in the nation's capital.

2011 The Mets choose Brandon Nimmo as the 13th overall player in the MLB June Amateur Draft, making him the first Wyoming student selected in the first round. The 18-year-old, who could not play for a Cheyenne East HS team because the Equality State does not offer high school baseball programs, batted .448 with fifteen home runs and 34 stolen bases in 70 games for his American Legion Post 6 club.

2012 Six Mariners pitchers combine in the franchise's third no-hitter when starter Kevin Millwood leaves the game with an injury, and five relievers keep the Dodgers hitless in the team's 1-0 victory at Safeco Field. Brian Runge, the home plate umpire, was also behind the dish for Philip Humber's perfect game, making him the first ump to call balls and strikes for two no-hitters in one season since Drew Coble accomplished the feat in 1990.

2016 Kelly Johnson becomes the only second player in baseball history to be traded from one team to another in consecutive seasons when the Mets obtained him from the Braves for minor league right-hander Akeel Morris and cash. Backstop Chad Kreuter was dealt by the White Sox to the Angels in 1997 and then again in 1998.

Joining Nolan Ryan (34), Johnny Oates (26), and Ivan Rodriguez (7), Adrian Beltre, who wore #29, becomes the fourth Ranger to have his uniform number retired by the team. In his eight seasons with the club, the Texas third baseman batted .304 with 199 homers and 699 RBI in 1098 games after joining the team as a free agent in 2011.
