Florida AD Scott Stricklin, ex-CFP committee member, says committees are 'not ideal to choose a postseason' By: Carter Bahns -- CBS Sports -- May 28, 2025 The future of the College Football Playoff is a hot-button issue at the SEC spring meetings, and Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin added to the discussions when he questioned the need for a selection committee altogether. Since the CFP's formation in 2014, various iterations of a 13-member committee constructed the postseason brackets, not in a dissimilar fashion to the NCAA's model for other championship sports. Stricklin said Tuesday, per Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger, that football is different from the other sports because it has less data and fewer games, and thus less to consider in the selection process. Stricklin, notably, served on the CFP selection committee from 2018 to 2021. He was among the numerous athletic directors and prominent current and former college football figures to hold a position on the subject. Members generally serve terms ranging from two to four years to facilitate an annual rotation. "A committee is not ideal to choose a postseason," Stricklin said. "I question whether it is appropriate for college football." Florida AD Scott Stricklin, ex-CFP committee member, says committees are 'not ideal to choose a postseason'
I am 100% behind SS on this matter. Automatic bids selected by committees is the road to ruin, the final blow to college football, IMHO. Why cheapen the game... and make some games boring and unimportant? This would be the fast track to everything I despise about the NFL and making it the model for college football... hail NO! 12 teams is more than enough and NO COLLEGE FOOTBALL CONFERENCE DESERVES AN AUTOMATIC bid to the college football playoffs. That will cheapen the game, and it will force other conferences to get their automatic bid leaving us with games that will not matter. I also think Sankey needs to fix our conference scheduling before he jumps into some NFL type playoffs. Yuk... Not every conference deserves a trophy. This NFL type playoff BS will be the final nail in the coffin of college football. We need only one thing in the SEC, and that is to bring back the 2 division format to the SEC. Make it two divisions each with 8 teams and two quads... Two in the East and two in the West. Every year flip one quad to the other side and that is an automatic seven game schedule... I have a format that works in a 3-year cycle... without the gerrymandering by the SEC. This would make the SECCG matter once again without the crazy attempts to make a single homogenous conference (with no divisions) look like a poor attempt at a Round-robin schedule... a schedule that they have been clowning with the last two years counting 2025. I will make a new thread for all this so enough of that for now. I have to once again voice my support behind Scott Stricklin and his view of this automatic bid nonsense. Sankey needs to focus on the SEC within the SEC and go back to 2 divisions.
Straight ranking 1-16 and no byes. No politics for unfair advantages. The 8 seed won last year but they were seeded too low by giving weak conferences more than they deserved. No potential winner is left out and no unfair byes. Not sure why anyone is against the extra week of football if they prefer 8 but whatever. 1-8 probably dont win the first round every year and may have a few surprises.
Very much agree with one adder; even the straight rankings get skewed by SOS. I would say straight 1-16 rankings from top half of the strength of schedule. No bullshit spots for Big12 and ACC. Weak conferences will have to play big OOC games or invest in getting better.
I actually like 4, simply because I loved how every week matters in that format. I also think the whole point is to identify the #1 team, and if you end up 5th, you probably aren’t #1. But if we went to a straight ranking of 16, we still have the question of how to make that ranking, if not with a committee.
I dont even care if the rankings are a little jacked up. If a school complains that they are left out like ole miss last year, dont lose to us late. The first round will be canon fodder anyway. Once in a while, there will be an upset.
Hell no. Osu deserved to be the champions last year. Thats like being penalized for playing a decent schedule. Remember when curbstreet said we didnt belong on the same field with osu because we lost to ol piss. There's only been one undefeated team in nfl history. Play it on the field like they did last year. Voting is bs..
If you go undefeated playing no one, you shouldn’t be near the top of the rankings. And teams that do that aren’t. Hence why UCF wasnt there in 2017 and two SEC teams were.
Oh well, Ohio State paid a hell of a price for a total whiff on Ted Ginn's play when the Human Eraser was held. Auburn whiff made people like Kirk Herbstreit under estimate us. Ohio State did too.
2 best conference records in each conference should be the teams in the playoffs. Simple as that. If a 3rd team is better than the one team in another conference, too bad….get better or go to a different conference. That solves the super conferences and bias. What’s the point of conferences right now?
