There has been some interesting dialogue comparing the '25 champ team to our previous greats. Because it's the offseason and I have a few mins in between diaper changes/baby hugs, I'm thinking about a summer contest. What if a collection of posters chose rosters from the best Gator squads? I'm thinking about 00, 06, 07, 14, 25 for starters. We could have posters provide "votes" for players that ascribe point values, then tally up to determine the best 6-man rosters. Is this nutz? Idk, but after baby watching and working all day, I'm ready for a pleasant distraction. Plz share your thoughts about the whole thing here. Which squads should be considered? I'm not interested in an all-time Gator squad, as we've done that in the past. I'm thinking pick the best six from a limited set of years; five is enough? Should these be six man squads or more? Or only five starters? Ideas about pt system? I'm thinking a simple 5 or 10 pt scale, which would be determined by a select panel of judges.
For example, contestant A selects: Walter Clayton Justin Hamilton Corey Brewer Joakim Noah Al Horford They earn pts as determined by the judges for each player. Interesting thing will be to pool the players from those Gator squads and ascribe pt values.
For example, rulez might stipulate that a contestant must a) choose players from no fewer than 4 diff squads and b) may not choose more than 2 players from any particular squad. Idk - just throwing out ideas.
Replace Hamilton with Wilbekin, and you have my team, and, probably, just about everyone else's team.
Agree, which is why I'm thinking about limits to force thinner squads. Ex - can't pick Brewer + Horford.
Should include 94 Final Four. Andrew D (can’t spell!) good enough for a long NBA career, and the block in the tournament was a shining moment
In my opinion Andrew Declercq had the greatest block in Gators basketball history. Thanks for the reminder. A too short snippet is shown in the linked video, which sent me to YouTube for an isolation of that play. Very surprised to find it doesn’t exist (or at least I couldn’t find it). Oh well, thanks for the pleasant memory.
There is a couple ways to do this. I suggest the following: 6 players from each Final 4 team are ranked 1-6, with 1 being worst and 6 being best. You must select 6 players, 1 from each team. You get a budget of 21.
Hmm, was sophomore Mike Miller better than Junior Corey Brewer. That's a tough one. I think I would go Brewer, just based on the way he shut guys down defensively in addition to his scoring prowess. I don't see Miller shutting down Aflalo the way Brewer did, but he's a solid pick, especially if you can't have two from the same team.
May I get three volunteers to serve as judges? Your task would be simply to rank the players. We are talking about 36(ish) players. I haven't decided yet whether the players should be ranked 1-36 or perhaps by position. It seems that with any ranking system, people are going to choose near identical rosters. With that, I'm thinking about going 8 deep; you get five starters and 3 bench players of any position.
I'm starting to compile the Gator rosters from each of the FF teams. Will go six deep, determined by minutes/game. 1993-94 Dan Cross - G Craig Brown - G Andrew DeClerq - F Jason Anderson - F Brian Thompson - F Dametri Hill - C 1999-00 Kenyan Weaks - G Teddy Dupay - G Mike Miller - F Donnell Harvey - F/C Udonis Haslem - F/C Brent Wright - F 2005-06 Taurean Green - G Lee Humphrey - G Corey Brewer - F Al Horford - F Joakim Noah - C Walter Hodge - G 2006-07 Taurean Green - G Lee Humphrey - G Corey Brewer - F Al Horford - F Joakim Noah - C Cliff Richards - C 2013-14 Scottie Wilbekin - G Michael Frazier - G Casey Prather - F Dorian Finney-Smith - F Patric Young - C Will Yeguete - F 2024-25 Walter Clayton Jr. - G Alijah Martin - G Will Richard - G Alex Condon - F Rueben Chinyelu - C Thomas Haugh - F
Players could send their picks to Davis by PM so folks have to make their own decisions and not partially use someone else's who already posted. Also, @GatorJason, who did the box scores and MVG this past year, with interesting insights into stats, might have some ideas about weighing former players and making them consistent through different eras.
