By: David Wunderlich -- May 28, 2025 In March of last year, I wrote a piece that was not one of my more well received ones of my career. I knew it wouldn’t be, though the backlash was a bit stronger than I expected. The general thrust of the article was that, while I knew no one wanted to hear it, the 2024 season appeared to be setting up for a real surge year in 2025. If nothing else, it was absolutely 100% true that no one wanted to hear that at the time coming off of the 5-7 campaign in 2023. However, I’m ready not just to declare that I was right, but that Florida officially has a championship window opening in 2025. Golden and Napier winning Basketball and Football Crystals back to back.....remind anyone of anything? I think I like the idea! 3 and 3 can hit the door, 4 and 4 and so much more!
Great to wish for and contemplate but I think the biggest thing holding us back is the defensive tackle position. Outside of banks, we are really thin there. I love the linebackers and defensive ends though. Lagway should have a fantastic year. Should be fun.
If we can stay healthy we have a good chance to take the next step as a football program. This team is absolutely talented And all we need to do is execute like this team knows how to... and pray we don't face the injury bug. No more silly mistakes like putting the coach's pet out on the line just to see him get our QB killed. No more preventable Special teams miscues, we've had enough of that... period. Let's see us work on 3rd down specifically on every part of the field. 3rd downs seem to be our Achilles-heel, and that is something we should be focusing on throughout this entire off season. I've been saying that we need to work on short yardage and that is something that we need to master. Short yardage mastery lends itself to the goal line offense... as well as the 2 point conversion. If we can master one skill set, fourth and short, we can master the two point conversion... and the goal line offense. That and the 3rd down mastery will put us in a much better position to succeed on game day than simply doing that same old tired thing, in the offseason, and never addressing these obvious shortcomings. Our offense is pretty dynamic with big play potential already proven out on the field and in the playbook. We have no problems with the big yardage plays and the long ball passing game. All we need to master is the little things, the short yardage... power game.

Another thing Sankey dropped the ball on. He should have forced ESPN to televise all SEC September games at NIGHT. It's blazing hot in the south in the month of September... and no other conference has that heat and deserves to be on at night than the SEC. If we make a new 9 game SEC schedule deal with ESPN we need to force Sankey to get ESPN to schedule all SEC games in September at nighttime. It's too hot down here in September, it's a health issue.
Bama game a few years back was too damn hot. Going inside the stadium was even worse, like tgere was no oxygen in the tunnel.
Not only that, the Gators playing Bama in mid-season should always be a night game just to get the most national television views... that game deserves nighttime broadcasting.
Yeah, the mid-season was misspeaking on my part, but it changes nothing, really. It's a huge game no matter when it's played.
We should only have night games for the first month. It was brutal just sitting. They shouldn't have to play in that.
Not as big of an advantage for the Gators now that practices are often held indoors but I enjoyed watching mighty UcheaT come into The Swamp and melting every other September. LOL!
