The House GOP’s “big, beautiful bill” will add so much money to the debt it will force across-the-board spending cuts to Medicare, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

CBO late Tuesday said the legislation will increase the debt by $2.3 trillion over 10 years. That will trigger as much as $500 billion in Medicare cuts starting as soon as 2026.

The congressional scorekeeper was responding to a request from Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.), ranking member of the House Budget Committee.

Current law requires the White House to “sequester” certain mandatory spending programs. Reductions in Medicare spending would be limited to 4 percent annually — or an estimated $45 billion for fiscal 2026.

House GOP bill's $2.3 trillion increase in debt could lead to Medicare cuts

For those of you here on Medicare, how much are you willing to have your benefits cut to ensure that Bill Gates and the Koch Brothers receive a larger tax cut?

Ironically, the Trump administration is cutting benefits, for Red State voters, in order to cut taxes for wealthy Blue State voters.

Does anyone think we can actually tackle the issue of our national debt without reforming programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security?

Not optimistic about that. Tax cuts for the super rich are the priority. Everything else except for defense be damned.

Please explain how the current legislation addresses your concern. The cuts to SNAP and Medicare are not even enough to cover the overspending and adding 10% to the National debt in one bill.

That is my point, this bill does not do anything about it. Neither party believes in fiscal responsibility right now and both are just playing lip service to it.

    Right here
This sounds ridiculous, but reading your article, it seems that an extra tax was levied on tanning beds due to the potential skin cancer risks, which presumably elevate costs of national health care. However, if posing potential risks that may elevate the costs of national health care are grounds for levying taxes, so too could we tax table saws, butter, and swimming pools. This does seem like an arbitrary tax that should be cut out.

I came to this realization in early 2000s. Once you see that both parties just use the "issues" to win the power, fiscal wise they are not different, just spend on different things.

I always root for a split congress and or president. Usually that seems like the most fiscal responsible government.

I agree, but where to start.

Go after organized fraud rather than individual
Stop taking out of SS, evaluate SSI fraud
    Layers of billing for medical

just thoughts off my addled brain. Everyone always wants to look at the bogeyman next door vs what is actually the problem.

As far as politics, I tend to look at any bills along party lines as bad. Congress is so fubar with tribalism. It would be interesting what the BBB vote would have been on a secret ballot.

    edit to add,

why is a tax on tips and overtime a bad thing? Is it not income and will become another way of dodging paying folks. Lets just end the tipping nonsense.

Half a win only. The Senate has enough RINOs to still try to screw up the deal. However, the House did an excellent job for both the House and Senate with Trump helping to push the bill across the House goal line.

Senator Thune has previously stated that the Senate would follow the House lead as Speaker of the House Mike Johnson had a more difficult job of getting the bill passed than he does as the Leader of the Senate. All the Senate needs to do is pass the big, beautiful bill.

The goal is to have the bill on President Trump's desk before Independence Day. There is no reason to take that long. Get it done already, the hard work has been done in the House.

That is just the tax part of the bill. The House has done as terrific job in completing a bill that encompasses all of Trump's promises to the American people. What a great morning in America!
