Yeah you’re right - but as has been discussed above, most encounters are very close range. I mean at 50 feet, I’m running the other way - unless he’s got my wife or kid or dog in his grip

 

This post conjures up some great “what if scenario” discussions we’ve had in our classes. Home invasions are a great topic. Late at night. You and the wife in bed, hear noises out in the living room. You’ve got your Glock, your sawed off shotgun, your AR-15 - whichever your weapon of choice. What do you do?

What is your maximum chance of survival? If you leave the bedroom you have no idea how many there are and how they’re armed. It’s really a no brainer - you stay in the bedroom and aim at the door and wait for it to open and pick them off as they come through. Hopefully the door stays shut. Let them have whatever they’re stealing. Not the bravest thing to do, but the smartest.

Now, if you’ve got a kid in their bedroom in the house it’s a whole different thing

 

Carjacking is another one. Is your car worth dying for? Is it worth killing for?
Let them take it.

Oh, is your kid in the back seat? Different rules of engagement

 

2 excellent posts. THINK it through. Know yourself and your situation. Others in the house means over-penetration risk. I’m sorry; I know it’s just stuff but the thought of my home being violated means Mrs P stays safe with the blunderbuss but I am not ceding the initiative to the bad guys. I am certain I am better trained and have thought long and hard about the possibility of taking another’s life more than they did, in most cases. I have an advantage.

The type of situation being discussed means you might have a jittery criminal who, unless he gives you a window, has the upper hand. It's not like legally armed civilians keep their firearm within reach. A guy comes up on a car with a gun, what can one do?

 

Somebody intentionally hurts my dog they stand a good chance of getting shot.

 

For certain but if he has a gun and can shoot, my dogs on his own, hope he bites his junk off.

 

I’m not saying my approach is wholly rational but I know me and I’ve thought through defending my space for many more years than the perp has thought about violating it. You might be right…but I’ve been wrong about lots of things.

 

I guess ours is stored illegally in the door and my partner is lefthanded. Its pretty damn conveniently stowed. He doesnt even have to dip his head.

 

Talk or typing on message boards about killing someone is cheap and easy.......and usually thoughtless.
Try actually blowing holes through someone and killing them and then lets here about it.

A friend of mine, who was a so called "tough guy", DID kill someone, in self defense with a hand gun. Although it was not
a stranger, a masked bandit or a hijacker. He knew the dude, and this happened over a woman.

My friend went to court, was exonerated and was not incarcerated, but he was also never the same again.

Killing folks, even for combatants in war, take a significant psychological toll. The fallout may even be catastrophic.
Check out the suicide rate for folks in the military, especially those with combat badges.

 

Phrasing.

 

One one hand, you might see it coming and be ready, on the other, some shlock surprises you and for the reasons already mentioned, and especially if there are other people in the vehicle, you have to let it go and hope the criminals just drive away and leave everyone present unharmed.

 

I am not as ready or equipped for the in-auto scenario as it seems less likely in my part of the world.

There used to be like a 3 or 4 step rule. Unlock glove box, remove from holster, rack, fire...something like that. If you had a ccp, you could have it immediately available, and concealed. When they got rid of the ccp requirements, the 3 or 4 step rule should have gone out the window with it.
