Mullen was incredibly selfish. He let a lot of people down that relied on him to do his job. He has an outstanding football mind but he is a selfish douche bag and that’s why he is at UNLV and not with the other great football minds in this sport.
That he certainly did...but I wouldnt compare DM's record and achievements as our HC to BN's. He turned us around pretty quick twice. Once after Horse teeth left and we did much better and once in his last year when he took a decent team and destroyed it.
He saw that we weren’t going to pay for top talent like the mutts did and said f it. Can’t blame him. UF is the problem wrt football. But most fans just want to blame the coach. And they’ve blamed 3 now with number 4 coming soon.
He could have an NFL roster and he wouldn’t win a championship. It’s painfully obvious he’s not a good game day coach. Poor man’s version of Charley Pell.
Holy moly, talk of extending Napier and we should have kept DM? This thread makes the 100 men vs gorilla thread look like a discussion of Nobel laureates.
IMO, contract extensions for recruiting purposes is backwards thinking in the landscape of modern NCAA football. Give top talent NIL money and a pathway to the league is all that matters If the university commits to the program overall and not just to the head coach, they will come. Giving what essentially is a vote of confidence for a so-so coach does nothing to inspire confidence.
If you knew how many times the money was ready and Mullen decided to not do the ground work you would be floored. He also didn’t do what it took to get donors on board by playing the game Kirby does. Once again on him.
There may be some truth to that. Buying rosters was just reality twenty years ago. Many were still pretending it was personality instead of bags that recruited the top classes. I do believe dirtbag urbs did leave over resistance to buying rosters
Look at how recruiting responded when UF gave Napier the public statement of confidence mid to late last season. That, plus the subsequent 4-game win streak totally turned our recruiting around. Stability still matters
Id rather use that unwarranted contract extension money on buying a roster and then see if the coach can earn that extension with a top 5 finish....sad world NCAA has become.
Buying the top players and top classes gives players confidence that they will compete. If your classes are ranked 10th, you will struggle to make the playoffs. If you struggle just to make it, you arent going to win it. We know who the real contenders are. If one of those guys get an elite qb, its goodnight Irene.
I think the boosters released the cash is all that happened. Theres no mystery. Bozo the clown can recruit the top classes given with a proper bank account. We arent even really in the conversation.
I think you’re oversimplifying things a bit. I also think you’re underestimating the potential of a top 10 class. I agree that a 20-ranked class isn’t going to win a championship. But there isn’t that much difference between a #4 and a #8 team in ability and potential. So much of the value of a class depends on filling needs and creating depth — plus the “services” assigning the ranking numbers also aren’t the word of God either.
To a degree but watch osu and Texas and tell me we are the same. Its money, not coaching that seperates them. Bama couldnt compete and Saban would have been exposed as just another great coach with zero chance of seven titles without tge talent advantage. SOS probably is a game or two better recordwise because he is a genius but theres a reason he won in 96 and got destroyed in 95
No argument - but if you’ve got the coaching acumen going you usually have stability as a result, right?
A transcendental QB moves the needle of a low top 10 class up significantly....and not surprisingly QB is the position where we are seeing the majority of the pay for play dollars going.
