Massive A2A dogfight. This isn't cooling off

India-Pakistan jets clash in one of the largest dogfights in recent history

The "dog fight" between Pakistani and Indian fighter jets, which Pakistani officials say downed five Indian planes, was one of the "largest and longest in recent aviation history," a senior Pakistani security source told CNN. The Pakistani claim has not been corroborated and could not be immediately verified by Newsweek.
A total of 125 fighter jets engaged in an hour-long aerial battle, with both sides confined to their own airspace as long-range missiles were exchanged at distances surpassing 100 miles, CNN said.

Not to be that guy, but its not a "dog fight" if you are shooting missiles from 100 miles away

Ok. Planes shooting at planes...guess US tech won again if India lost 5 and had no hits on Pakistani planes

Actually, I think he’s right. I’ll do some quick research, but I’m pretty sure most of Pakistan’s Air Force is U.S. tech (F-16s et al) and India uses mostly formerly Soviet equipment, though we are working to change that given how poorly Russian equipment has fared in Ukraine.

Edit: Generally, I was correct, though, India also has a fair number of French fighters (Mirage 2000s and Rafales) and Pakistan has a fair number of Chinese fighters (J-10s).

Depends on who you ask, doesn’t it? Ask a fighter pilot who’s up for ace, and a kill is a kill is a kill, no matter if you saw the whites of his beady little eyes or not.

India was always non-aligned so I assumed they bought stuff from everyone. Russia, Western Europe, the US.

Look the whole premise of the movie top gun was that reliance on long range missiles was degrading close-in dogfighting skills :)

A dogfight between Chinese-made Pakistani jets and French-made Indian Rafale fighters will be closely scrutinized by militaries seeking insights that could offer an edge in future conflicts.

A Chinese-made Pakistani fighter plane shot down at least two Indian military aircraft on Wednesday, two U.S. officials told Reuters, marking a potential major milestone for Beijing's advanced fighter jet.

Experts said the live use of advanced weapons would be analyzed across the world, including in China and the United States which are both preparing for a potential conflict over Taiwan or in the wider Indo-Pacific region.

One U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters there was high confidence that Pakistan had used the Chinese-made J-10 aircraft to launch air-to-air missiles against Indian fighter jets.

    none of our business

war between nuclear armed countries on the edge of the powder keg known as the middle east is none of our business.

US VP Vance says war between India and Pakistan will be 'none of our business'

U.S. Vice President JD Vance said on Thursday that India and Pakistan should de-escalate tensions, but he added that the U.S. cannot control the nuclear-armed Asian neighbors and a war between them would be "none of our business".

"We want this thing to de-escalate as quickly as possible. We can't control these countries, though," Vance said in an interview on Fox News show "The Story with Martha MacCallum."

"What we can do is try to encourage these folks to de-escalate a little bit, but we're not going to get involved in the middle of war that's fundamentally none of our business and has nothing to do with America's ability to control it," he added.

India is an important partner for Washington, which aims to counter China's rising influence, while Pakistan remains a U.S. ally despite its diminished importance after Washington's withdrawal from neighboring Afghanistan in 2021.

How Chinese Missiles Routed India’s Air Force Over Pakistan

Namely, Islamabad claimed that Chinese-made PL-15 air-to-air missiles—probably fired by Pakistan’s Chinese-provided J-10C warplanes—downed three Indian Air Force (IAF) French-built Rafale jets, one Indian-built Su-30MKI, and one Russian-built MiG-29. These planes—and in particular the Rafales—were among some of the strongest warplanes in the IAF.

In short, the recent battle between Pakistani and Indian forces ended in an unambiguous victory for Pakistan. It is also a warning to the West that China’s military technology, as seen in Pakistan, should not be underestimated.
    .........................................................
Nevertheless, the Pakistanis have deployed this system with lethal impact in their growing conflict with India. Their successful engagement downing five IAF warplanes is a tremendous blow to the IAF, as well as to India’s military. While any military engaging in a near-peer conflict can expect large numbers of its airplanes to be damaged or destroyed, the fact of the matter is that the Pakistanis were not supposed to be this effective.

It is still the earliest phase of the conflict, and further clashes are likely. India, at least on paper, has many advantages over their Pakistani neighbors. But the successful attacks by the Pakistani planes indicate that Islamabad is playing for keeps. What’s more, it is a warning to the Americans that Chinese missile technology should not be underestimated—especially as the Americans and Chinese circle each other for a future battle over Taiwan.

In this case, I really don’t think it would matter who was President. There’s a story, possibly apocryphal, that when these two were rattling sabres in early 2001, the Bush Administration got them to knock it off by handing each the other’s war plans. But, of course, that’s the sort of thing that would only work once. I used to think it was strictly the nuclear weapons that kept the wraps on that beef. Now I’m not sure it wasn’t our extended military presence in Afghanistan and Pakistan that kept a lid on it. Well, we don’t have that anymore.

So Trump gets his big “no world war 3”; Modi will sign some big trade deal with the US; and Pakistan slips further into a failed terrorist state. Sounds about right…

    • India and Pakistan both agree to a full and immediate ceasefire

    • Pakistan's deputy PM says it has "always strived for peace and security in the region"

    • India's foreign secretary confirms the pause in fighting between the two countries began at 17:00 local time (12:30 BST)

    • Earlier, Donald Trump said the ceasefire is the result of "a long night of talks mediated by the United States"

Pakistan and India have agreed 'full and immediate ceasefire'
