One of the goals of President Donald Trump’s 145% tariffs against China is to drive manufacturing back to America. But the odds of that are low, at least when it comes to toys. “We don’t see that happening,” Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Tuesday, less than a day after the company withdrew annual financial targets. “We need to remember that a significant part of toy creation happens in America,” he said. “Design, development, product engineering, brand management all happens in America. Making product, producing product in other countries, allows us to create quality products at affordable price points.” Mattel has been diversifying its global manufacturing for nearly a decade in an effort to reduce its dependence on China. By the end of the year, less than 40% of Mattel’s product will be sourced from the country. Kreiz noted that in two years, no country will represent more than 25% of Mattel’s sourcing. Mattel CEO says toy manufacturing won't come to America, but price hikes will Can someone remind me the point of Trump's tariffs and which version of winning applies to this scenario? Fentanyl? The border? Bring manufacturing to the US? DEI?
Cheap slave labor made toys WERE NEVER COMING BACK to the U.S.A.... was never part of the plan. But keep trying to disparage Trump's attempt to force fair trade deals.
That's ok, I remember on a field trip from school how you could make your own dolls out of corn husks or something. Every farm a doll factory!
Praytell, how do you force "fair trade deals" with a country like Vietnam, where daily minimum wage is roughly equivalent to American hourly wages?
I dont play with dolls anymore, and they called them 'action figures,' those are dolls for boys. You cant call them dolls because that would make it gay.
What's happening with the "slave labor made toys" ? How about the "slave labor made" ubiquitous electronic devices? Is there a plan that you could outline for us using real terms, not political talking points? TIA. It's obviously not surprising by now that Trump supporters can (ostensibly) follow along with an issue for this long, and still not understand it. But it's amazing that they can still feel a strange license to argue something that they know nothing about. Today's Murica ......
We're going to kick out 9-10 million employed workers ..... (They'll go back home to be unemployed) Then we're going to bring all the manufacturing jobs to America ..... (Even though we probably have only about 8 million unemployed Americans) Then we'll pay our newly employed Americans a higher wage than was paid to foreign manufacturing workers, raising prices ..... Then Americans will pay higher prices, and all of the unemployed foreigners will have to buy more things from America that are more expensive than they had been before. ....... and somehow these unemployed foreigners in places like China and Viet Nam will be able to do so!! Result : We'll ALL be rich beyond our wildest dreams. Make sense? The most interesting thing about all of this patently obvious bullstuff coming from an obviously ignorant con man is that ........ there is a single himan being in our country who has any reaction besides laughing at him. Murica.
So we pay for 8/9 million to be returned home. Wait years while large businesses onshore manufacturing, then pay these workers about 8X what the workers were getting overseas, and eventually, we win and the Vietnamese can now afford high price products even though less are working? To me, this whole plan sounds vaguely familiar. Something I think I saw on South Park.
Trump already addressed this and alleviated parental concern by telling them to buy fewer toys for their kids at higher prices. This display of awesome problem solving ability was discussed a little in the “Trump goes to war with America’s Children” thread. See. Problem solved. The man is a genius.
You righties crack me up. If a toy costs $19.99 today and will cost $39.99 in the future then you will sell a lot fewer units and way fewer dollars. Basically you'd lose 50% of your sales dollars and 75% of your units. Now you cut designers, brand managers, sales people, retail staff, web designers due to your lower volume. You guys are breaking America because you dont understand the economy.
