Were you there? I was. Game-Winning Field Goal vs Auburn (Oct. 29, 1966) Spurrier won the Heisman as a QB, but his “Heisman moment” perhaps came from a different spot on the field. On October 29, 1966, the undefeated Gators were tied with the Auburn Tigers late in the 4th quarter. After driving the Gators down the field and into field goal range, Spurrier called his own number, according to head coach Ray Graves, and decided to kick the game-winning field goal himself.
I saw most of them on TV. About the most memorable in person was the rain game against UGa in 1993. The ball was wet and Wuerffel and another QB were ineffective. It was our distinguished RB who kept the ball away from UGa, who could have won the game until Spurrier got his time out called just before the snap. It was a classic Fla - Ga football game that flipped the script from the Dooley days.
Saw that as an 11 year old selling Cokes at the game. I had made $1.75 and had 3 Cokes left. A large group of us weasels were given some space in the south end zone area, where Spurrier's game winning kick happened. I can still feel the tension followed by amazement when that long kick went through the uprights! Go Gators!
I was 8 when he kicked the FG in 1966 and don't remember it. I do remember the 1967 Orange Bowl game on tv. I also remember going to the stadium with my dad for a game sometime before he graduated but I don't remember who we were playing. I do know we sat in the South end bleachers. I started selling cokes in 1969. Started buying my season tickets in 1980 and still have them.
Florida Alabama 1991 Gators 35 Tide 0 Eric Rhett ran for 173 yards, many of which came on a counter play Bama couldn't stop. It was the first time we beat them at home in six tries.
James Jones TD catch against Miami in '82. I was sitting about the 10 yard line toward the north side of the stadium. I wasn't sure Jones was in but the refs called a TD. I'm good with that.
Still married 58 years later. Hoping one of our grandchildren is a Gator! It’s ALWAYS great to be a Florida Gator!
For me, we lived in Jax in 1984; drove downtown and watch UF annihilate Georgia 27-0. It was such a euphoric cartharsis! Drove down to Gainesville that night and partied hard at Lillian’s. Can’t recall much after than but I know I was happy.
Hmmm lets see - Interesting games I went to: Some: 99 yard Chris Collingsworth TD pass game Ga Tech lightning delay (road) game and UF win in 80 The aforementioned 82 James Jones UF win over Miami 92 UF victory at Vandy 95 SEC Championship (I remember almost getting killed on 285 on the way in by a maniac driver) Zook / Rex win over an Unbeaten UGA team (I was sitting on the UGA side, lol) 2006 UGA win 2006 National Title game Tebows next to last game in the swamp Numerous Nole beat downs To name a few
The other game that I had a "prime seat" for the action was the 84 Georgia game. My roommate and I scalped two tickets which ended up being in the lower seats of the end zone. The same end zone that the goal line stand took place in. We were right there and could just about hear every pad popping and grunt by the players. I was also sitting on the same line as Kerwin to Nattiel. It was as if I was seeing the field like Kerwin when he was dropping back on that play. I could see Ricky beating the Georgia player and Kerwin letting it fly. It was utter pandemonium when Ricky caught the ball and high stepped into the end zone. I think my ears are still ringing.
I’ve been fortunate to witness firsthand many great moments over the years: too many to choose one. So I’ll name the first. Jimmy Dunn’s 76 yard TD run from scrimmage that gave us 7-6 victory over Georgia in 1958. Typical Bob Woodruff game. We had 3 first downs the entire game to Georgia’s 18 but we won. The only other highlight that game was Bobby Joe Green’s 82 yard punt that flipped the field for us and held Georgia at bay for the umpteenth time in that game. Most beautiful punt I have seen before or since. Kind of wobbled off his foot then kept soaring until it morphed into a perfect spiral and backed the Dogs to their 10 or so yard line.
