Were you there? I was. Game-Winning Field Goal vs Auburn (Oct. 29, 1966) Spurrier won the Heisman as a QB, but his “Heisman moment” perhaps came from a different spot on the field. On October 29, 1966, the undefeated Gators were tied with the Auburn Tigers late in the 4th quarter. After driving the Gators down the field and into field goal range, Spurrier called his own number, according to head coach Ray Graves, and decided to kick the game-winning field goal himself.
I saw most of them on TV. About the most memorable in person was the rain game against UGa in 1993. The ball was wet and Wuerffel and another QB were ineffective. It was our distinguished RB who kept the ball away from UGa, who could have won the game until Spurrier got his time out called just before the snap. It was a classic Fla - Ga football game that flipped the script from the Dooley days.
Saw that as an 11 year old selling Cokes at the game. I had made $1.75 and had 3 Cokes left. A large group of us weasels were given some space in the south end zone area, where Spurrier's game winning kick happened. I can still feel the tension followed by amazement when that long kick went through the uprights! Go Gators!
I was 8 when he kicked the FG in 1966 and don't remember it. I do remember the 1967 Orange Bowl game on tv. I also remember going to the stadium with my dad for a game sometime before he graduated but I don't remember who we were playing. I do know we sat in the South end bleachers. I started selling cokes in 1969. Started buying my season tickets in 1980 and still have them.
Florida Alabama 1991 Gators 35 Tide 0 Eric Rhett ran for 173 yards, many of which came on a counter play Bama couldn't stop. It was the first time we beat them at home in six tries.
James Jones TD catch against Miami in '82. I was sitting about the 10 yard line toward the north side of the stadium. I wasn't sure Jones was in but the refs called a TD. I'm good with that.
Still married 58 years later. Hoping one of our grandchildren is a Gator! It’s ALWAYS great to be a Florida Gator!
