Yeah but apparently the odds moved in favor of us recently because even after the SEC championship, we were third behind Auburn by everyone by about 50 on average. Glad to see people think we’re now just behind Duke which in actuality makes us pretty even with them due to some legacy points.
Another fun review - the discussion about overall #1 seed and people's opinions about the Auburn/FL seeding. How'd that work out? Problem was supposin that Auburn should be seeded higher than the Gators. (if only there were a way to determine . . . ) Ironic! Yep, they sure did, but it didn't help them beat the team that should have been seeded above them. It turns out that you were right! Those games (against TN, Aub, AL + SECt) DID provide unique insight into the Gators' future. Look, I'm aware of recency bias and concurrent validity, etc. so I'm just messin' with ya. I did, however, feel strongly that the Gators deserved to be seeded higher than Auburn. In the end there was evidence to support that.
I didn’t ever get the vibe that rade was rooting for any team other than the gators, or even arguing that there were better teams. He was simply explaining the metrics. The metrics are what they are and that’s all they ever have been. They’re a tool, but they’re not a crystal ball. I’ve always argued the metrics, preseason polls, early season polls, and polls in general don’t really matter. The games will still play out how they play out. Just win your games and you’ll end up where you want to be. That’s what the gators did. I’d much rather see you dig up the posts from people who called our team embarrassing. Said they lacked grit and or played lazy. Said our coach wasn’t good enough and our AD was a cheap ass trying to strike gold with a cheap up and comer that would never succeed here. Etc, etc, etc.
Im always game for being messed with, Davis, when it comes with the Gators winning. Though as you know, while I thought (and still do) that Auburn deserved the overall #1 seed, I picked Florida to win the tournament. The first question was about the past, and the second about the future.
My purpose is to suggest that the metrics were wrong. Rade is a good egg and can certainly take it. I’m not interested in digging up posts on the other stuff.
Please do the same with all the posters who argued with me over Clayton being a true point guard or that he was going to have tired legs by playing 30+ minutes per game. thanks Not serious with the request, but you know what I'm saying
Yeah, you're right . . . there were a LOT who guaranteed us this year would be anywhere between tough to disastrous with Clayton being PG. They can edit their posts but I can still see them. LOL!
The metrics are what they are and they are imperfect. They’re only as good as the data that is input into them and the algorithms used to decipher said data. They are, however, unbiased. Changing the algorithms to favor this years team and possibly get us the number one overall seed could just as easily punish us in the years to come and we’d be right back here again proclaiming them to be wrong, just for different reasons this time. The committee has a handful of metrics at their disposal and they’re not forced to use all or any of them really. There was not a consensus of metrics that said we should have been the top seed. I think the committee did a good job with the seeding based on the info they had at their disposal. Few, if any, outside of Gator nation thought we should be the number one seed, even though many of those same people had us picked to win the whole thing. It’s just a weird thing to obsess over. And yes, I would say the amount of times you’ve revisited this topic is obsessive.
There are numerous metrics. They all pretty much agreed that Duke, Houston, Florida and Auburn were the best four teams with a gap to #5. Each should be a #1 seed in a region and Florida was punished for having and easy OOC slate. Not really our fault that the ACC was terrible when we scheduled UNC, FSU, Wake Forest and Virginia. In a normal year they would be decent competition. Auburn played a hard OOC schedule and did well. And they did win the regular season SEC crown. I have no problem with them being rewarded for that. Yeah, I know that we took it to them at their house but that was only one game.
Didn't see this mentioned but thought it interesting. The Gators finished 9-1 against the final AP Top 9, with the only loss coming at #5 UT. Finished 12-2 against the final top 20 (Kentucky being the second loss).
This didn't get any remarks in another thread but KenPom final rankings still didn't have Florida number 1?
I enjoy reminding people of their misjudgments only insofar as it reminds all of us to be humble in the moment, to be aware we are not prescient and to allow for the human condition. Many of us are grateful we are not judged by our misdeeds, in print at least, and some of them have made us the wiser.
That I would like to see...please also include all those who were calling for Golden to resign before the facts were out
in the end Houston and Duke had better "metrics" but the Gators had bigger stones, a 10X battle-tested never-say-die killer instinct, were more clutch (didn't wilt under the bright lights) and were just plain WINNERS. Had all the intangibles those two statistical teams never had.
I KNEW this would happen. Here we went and won all the games we were told to play in the tourney and now KenPom has decided that we actually came in 3rd place. Why does this always happen to us??? What could we have done differently? I mean, why can't we keep all our NC gear we bought? Can we at least get a discount for buying the "Duke and Flagg are the GOATs" gear, now that it has been ordained? Can we petition to the committee - or even Kenny Smith - that we still deserve the award? I mean, Barkley is going to ding us because we beat them twice but Kenny should know that if we beat his UNC team, that implies that UNC could be considered second because... Personally, I blame Stricklin. Why? why not?
