Looks like NFL lite is officially a go. The NCAA and its five power conferences have agreed to allow schools to directly pay players for the first time in the 100-plus-year history of college sports. The NCAA and its leagues are planning to alert plaintiffs' attorneys Thursday that they are prepared to move forward with a multibillion-dollar agreement to settle three pending federal antitrust cases, sources told ESPN. The NCAA will pay more than $2.7 billion in damages over 10 years to past and current athletes, according to sources. Sources said the parties also have agreed to a revenue-sharing plan allowing each school to share up to roughly $20 million per year with its athletes. NCAA, Power 5 agree to let schools pay players
Off the cuff, I would think NIL values might decrease as a result. Or, the money will be much more focused to higher performers while the "rest" of the roster is just getting the rev share.
I definitely think it will change, as will lots of other things. The teams that were the best at utilizing it will likely continue to use it to their advantage though.

Just because they can doesn’t mean they have to The boosters are already doing all the heavy lifting and I can’t imagine whatever the schools will/can pay would be significant enough that an nil deal wouldn't overcome. Maybe you get actual contacts where scholarships mean something in terms of committing more than one year? Also have to assume title ix still comes into play and the athletic departments overall aren’t rolling in cash then you have to hire more staff to do hr, payroll, etc to take care of all the athletes and they’re even less profitable

The NCAA cannot write sweeping laws changing the definition of amateurism on college campuses... not over by a mile. The money "settlement" is supposed NIL compensation, which should be litigated too... IT'S NOT BACK PAY.
I don’t like it either but it’s better than the chirade we’ve been watching and pretending it’s not happening. It’s like this dumb lawsuit of pretending we weren’t buying the qb.
Yeah, I get it. But, professional sports have rules about who can sign who, draft sequences, salary caps. etc. So I guess the rule in college now is whoever has the biggest payroll wins?
There will not be multi year contracts. The first 5+ star that says he will only sign 1 yr deals will be the first to find a school that will oblige him.
Been that way for a long time. I don’t watch the nfl hardly ever and stuff like Rashada is the reason I turned out. The things you mentioned are to me the things the nfl does better than college.. I may end up tuning college out also. I’m debating the Miami game. The biggest factor is it’s going to be super hot and listening to this lawsuit crap doesn’t make me want to watch football.
They’ve capped their spending at ~20 million. Broken down over the entire athletic dept, it’s not really that much per athlete. Especially if title nine forces an equal split. NIL will still be a big part of recruiting and not just in football. The schools with bases that want to spend the most and buy the best will continue still do so. I do expect their self imposed cap to be one of the first things challenged in court though. I’d expect unions and a cba in short order as well.
Probably right. You could negotiate this as part of a cba, but the schools won’t want to be on the hook for 4-5 years for every kid they sign either. They’ll need some way to cull the rosters, and if they leave themselves an out, they’ll probably be leaving outs for the players too. It’s going to be a mess. That much we know.
I don't see it as "pay to play", I see it as revenue sharing. I know this is just semantics, but it's a relevant one. People are going to paint the picture that kids are selfish, blah, blah blah.....But they are generating massive amounts of money for their teams, and the number is so absurd that it's time to share in that. NOT THE KIDS FAULT, just a reality of the times we live in. If anything, I blame the adults for milking the system for far too long.
