No, they were not Democratic Socialist. They literally murdered Democratic Socialists in Nazi Germany. The SPD was banned in 1933 until the end of the war.

 

Although the Nazis called their party the National Socialist Party, they were socialist in name only and it wasn't remotely Democratic. The German economic system under the Nazis can best be described as crony capitalism.

 

Even better is the actual socialists in WW2 were our allies. Russia.

 

I suspect people might have been more informed 20-30 years ago. I don't know if it's true that liberals took over the school system then.
But I suspect people being so misinformed is due to the growth of multiple 'media' sources, many pushing an extremely slanted if not completely dishonest view of the news. Not to mention the tragic decline of newspapers.

And, yes, I think partisanship has had a huge impact. How many times did conservatives claim here that Trump has resuscitated the terrible economy we had under Obama?
How many Republicans believed that unemployment went up under Obama?

The definition of a democracy from the Oxford dictionary:
"A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives."
The latter sounds like an accurate description of the government of the US under the Constitution. Being a Republic and Democracy are not mutually exclusive. A government through elected representatives in which virtually every citizen (with a limited number of exceptions) has the right to vote can accurately be referred to as a democracy. By the way the USSR, the People's Republic of China and the Peoples Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea) are (or were in the case of the USSR) all Republics.

 

I’ve seen concerning data points on younger generations, but I wouldn’t be so quick to blame schools. Schools don’t teach “current events”.

I’d often notice older Americans - including posters here, would rail about the lack of civics education… before demonstrating a total lack of understanding about our system of govt themselves. Seems like for many, their civics education either didn’t stick or it was lost to decades of mental deterioration.

Clearly it’s a huge issue where people are getting their news from. Saw that huge numbers of young people are getting their “newz” from TikTok. That’s just as, if not more concerning, than the 70 year olds zombified by Fox News.

 

Coummunist East Germany was “the German democractic republic”. North Korea is the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea”. The notion that these names actually represented their governance is asinine.

I wonder what drives these “we are not a democracy we are a republic” hissy fits. Is it one word sounds like Democrat (BAD!) and one word sounds like Republican (Good!)? The use of the word Democracy is generally and broadly applied to governments that are elected by the people, which includes Republics. For some reason that generalization is offensive to those on the right, but at the same time they will use Democratic socialism, socialism, communism, fascism and autocracy interchangeably.

 

It’s an odd stance these days for them. One argument for a republic vs a pure democracy is that mob rule will ensue and you need more qualified representatives to make decisions. But seems like they would be “elites” and therefore are automatically bad.
