I understand that paidinfull and I didn’t intend to take a shot at your post, but rereading my words that is what I did.
I think dumb mistakes have cost us on the field and most, not all, really good teams and coaches minimize stupid mistakes, particularly turnovers. I still think that will be one of CBN’s strengths too but, thus far it hasn’t been that way.
One thing that frustrates me is that CBN has done an amazing job of improving our roster, IMO, in spite of just completing our third consecutive losing season. It’s like a catch 22: We need a better roster to win and to have
a better roster we need to win. Despite that, the roster is much improved now thanks to CBN’s efforts. Now we need to start getting better, much better, on the field. It’s going to be tough to continue the upgrade otherwise.
I think we have the right man as head coach. But I think we need football to be fun 7,8 or nine times this year for us Gators or we may lose some of that rebuild momentum.

Spurriers teams were some of the most heavily penalized teams in the nation. He won though.

Just providing some perspective, not arguing that we shouldn’t strive to be better in all facets of the game. That should always be the goal, even when you’re at the top.

Certainly and I agree with you but spurriers offense could overcome penalties. Mullen's offense under Trask could as well. We didn't always reach our potential in part because of penalties but man, it was fun knowing 2nd or 3rd and 15 wasn't a drive killer under those two. Can't say for sure but under Napier so far I don't believe we fare well under those circumstances.

Maybe that "letter"was addressed to his position coach... the one that left us for A&M?

Yeah, so many phantom penalties that the NCAA changed the rules to make these refs point out who committed them... added instant replay too.

I don't remember... Not sure instant replay was allowed in college football at that time. NFL,yes, college not yet.

If I had to guess... that game was the reason for the change.

I only point that out because the discussion was about how Spurrier’s teams were so heavily penalized, yet The Swindle was when Zook was head coach

Not only that, but Spurrier’s South Carolina teams 2005-2015 where consistently among the least penalized (4 or 5 least). Same coach same basic philosophy, a lot less penalties.
It has happened over and over since the Pell era, once they leave UF their teams get penalized consistently less.

I think SOS left becasue of the lack of support from our front office in those penalty matters... At least that what I remember about it. But yeah, shortly after he left the rules changed. And yes, the Swindle may have had something to do with it too.. regardless of who was our coach at that time. The SOS departing saga is one reason why I will never like that last AD. Don't make me say his name and let's just drop him altogether from this discussion. :D;)

The Swindle was definitely the bellwether game for implementing instant replay

The swindle in the swamp game was hard to stomach! I've heard many sports announcers say that game was the reason instant replay came about!!

Nunnery doesn’t move the needle, but I think LB is by far our weakest position.
