Just so everyone knows how track works as far as determining the National Championship... The top 48 entries in each event compete in each Region (2 Regions- East/ West.) (So the top 96 marks in the country- roughly.) The top 12 in each event qualify for nationals. (So the top 12 of the 48.) 12 from the east/ 12 from the west, so 24 in each event go to Nationals in Eugene Oregon... Top 8 in each event score... East Regional Yesterday It was Day 1 of the Men. Most events were about whittling those 48 qualifiers down to 24 who will compete Friday. Then Friday will be about whittling the 24 down to the 12. So in that sense I saw a lot of Gator qualifiers into Friday, including 5 in the 400!
The Gator women’s team had the following athletes qualify: 1. Parker Valby in both the 5K and 10k 2. Flomena Asekol in the 1500 and 5K 3. Claire Bryant in both the LJ and HJ 4. Alida VanDaalen in the SP and Discus 5. Elsie Thorner in the 3000 Steeple 6. Grace Stark in the 110 H.H. 7. Gracelyn Leiseth in the SP ( her 5th personal best this year) 8. Anthaya Charlton LJ. The men qualified the following: 1. Sean Bodie Dixon LJ and TJ 2. Wanya McCoy 100, 200, 4x100 3. Robert Gregory 200 and 4x100 4. Jevaughn Powell 400, 4x4, and 4x100 5. Reheem Hayles 400 and 4x 400 6. Malique Smith Band 4 x 100 7. Rios Prude Jr. 4 x 400 8. Jenoah McKiver 4 x 400 9. Malcolm Clements LJ 10. Abraham Sargent Javelin 11. William Gross Hammer 12. Kai Chang Discus 13. Pavej Khan 1500. The women did not qualify in any of the relays, the men qualified in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400.
thanks so much for posting. I was going to look this up today. I wonder how this sets us up for the NCAAs. I really like how many guys qualified. I wonder if they could contend for a title. The women had far fewer qualify, BUT Valby by herself could score 20. Add on a few more here and there and the ladies could score 45- which should be top 3. Edited: to be clearer about the men's and women's chances. Valby is our national championship winning female distance runner.
The women do not have numbers necessarily, but they do have quality… frankly I believe Mouse would be disappointed with 45 points, at least somewhat. Of course everyone has to perform up to their potential, but the key could be Clare Bryant scoring in the HJ, Gracelyn in the SP, and Anathaya Charlton in the LJ. The men are competing in quite a few events, I believe only Texas has more individual competitors, if Sargent or Gross can somehow score points, it may come down to the relays… of course that always seems to be the case.
For the women, I was hoping for top 3 this year. So that's why I mentioned 45. Last year Arkansas was 3rd and scored 46 points. We were 2nd with 51. TX won with 83 but that's a really high number. I think 60 usually wins. Last year the men won with 57...
I think you are spot on… a top two or three is a fair assessment. It’s kind of an atypical UF women’s team, absolutely no qualifiers in track until the 1500 meters, (aside from Grace Stark in the 110 meters) then qualifiers in all the distant events and a strong contingent in the field events. It reminds me of some of the past Arkansas teams, just a little less depth. It should be an interesting meet on both sides. I’m looking forward to watching.
