What is the “extreme reaction?” People voicing displeasure on social media? Don’t make contextually stupid comments in a very public setting and that doesn’t happen.

You yourself think his comments were “a bit much.” Why?

If Butker had gotten up there and given a speech about how vocational schools are a better value than a college education I’d be critical of him for similar reasons. It’s not the time nor the place to make those comments. Inappropriate.

Why? Because I admit I'm biased and think that many "overly religious" people are often not balanced in some way and are overcompensating for something. But I also acknowledge there are like minded people as him. I dont know if he is outright against women working but if he just values traditional roles heavily and his family and religious peers do as well Why do people care enough to petition for his firing? You think that is a rational response? If he was saying what he said in uniforn, during interviews, at ag games etc then sure, but this was a private religious college graduation.

I've seen comparisons in here to Putin. It's wild

To be fair, even in this room these were not all “like minded people”. His words are divisive among Catholics. So basically, he has a view on women that is maybe 50-50 across various Christian denomination and basically universally condemned outside of that. Not condemned in the sense that people probably wouldn’t agree it is more ideal or desirable, but rather that he came across as judgmental and dismissive of those who would choose something else or simply have to work out of necessity. I think the Benedictine nuns did an excellent job picking apart why this is problematic.

Fair enough and discussion about it is healthy and should happen. Where I disagree is with the petitions and some of the venom that is spewed by the swaths of casual sports fans and politically driven hangers on especially while they turn a blind eye to some pretty bad people in their own entertainment world of sports, music, politics etc.

And for the record, I'm equally disheartened by the increase in jersey sales as a response. It is a culture war and its a dumb one but it does take two to tango. It's just a continuing dive into extreme divisiveness that has been going on for years now. Neither side is interested in reasonable debate of these things.

Edit to add to this and my prior comment that some of his phrasing warrants backlash like "diabolical lies." Again though, the response from the masses has only given him and his "ilk" more support from people who didn't even know the guy existed and likely don't like their lives in similar fashion.

A little different though. One is a philosophical difference. Some of us see Butker's point (although he went way to far in making it in my opinion) While diddy is physically harming women.

They arent even in the same ballpark.

If the argument is venue, than I agree...but the issue most have are with his content. I understand that, but it has been way overboard.

I wasn’t suggesting they are the same. Only that arguments generate more replies than agreements do. Everyone agrees Diddy is a piece of shit.

The content in that venue was inappropriate. Telling a bunch of women graduating from college the importance of becoming mothers is at BEST incredibly tone deaf.

    I agree about venue.
But the cancel reflex is just over the top.

And what about the surge in jersey sales? Over the top?

You may be right to some extent but here it looks like he was alone and unarmed. Unless he rented out the entire floor or had guards positioned, it would have just taken one passerby to give him an attitude adjustment. Maybe there’s some truth to the old saying that only the good die young. This makes me so mad.

give you a little nugget. If you ever encounter a domestic like that. Run away. Do not get involved. There is zero good that will come of it. My educated guess is That woman has been hit by him multiple times and sticks around. You go in there trying to save the day and end up face down. Domestics are the most volatile and unpredictable encounters you can make. Now if I know the woman a different story, but there is. 0.0% chance i would get involved with what I saw .

I can’t disagree with you. I have said the same things to other people many times. I might not do it now being older, fatter, and wiser, but I got involved a couple times back in the day and don’t regret it.

you and I have chatted privately before. Although highly likely i would go through someone like diddy. This is not a controlled environment like a sport fight, boxing, UFC, judo match etc. real fights are very unpredictable and anything can happen. It’s a different world now and I would absolutely walk away and not get involved. things i share with students and others is walk away and stay alive. unless you are personally physically in danger and if then do enough to engage and disengage and get away. You engage a domestic like that and you are just as likely to get stabbed in the liver by the woman as you defend her from her man.
