He’s come in and put a lot of emphasis on community service… which I like. For all the good UF offers, they just as extractive to GNV… almost single-handedly have created a housing crisis here, Alachua county has highest poverty rate… always found it upsetting that we have young black men from tough areas playing for our football team but UF can’t seem to engage with the Eastside ? But Sasse has put a huge emphasis on community service and engagement. We’ll see if it has substance but so far so good

I don’t see how UF has created a housing crisis. They are responsible for most of apartment construction in town and most of the job creation and new retail businesses entering the area. Gville has more affordable housing that other areas of Florida.

true 10 years ago- not now. The rise in luxury apartments because of the reduction in bright future scholarships has caused all the rates to Increase. And the luxury apartments aren’t event full. They have like a 20% vacancy … for example, there’s a 14-1 vacancy to homeless person ratio. What these complexes are doing is what’s called a 5 over 1. 5 apartments to 1 business. So you use the little coffee shop at the bottom to write off the vacant apartments.
I work in the non-profit sector. I get single, working class moms calling me weekly going “I work 50 hours a week (sometimes at UF LOL), have 2 kids, moved in at $800 a month… now rent is 1300. Veteran retirees “I moved in at 800$, now it’s 1500… GNV has close to 200 homeless veterans which is a sin in my book.

all that to say, UF could solve housing, health equity, public transportation issues that they helped contribute to if they sneezed in the right direction. They send students in to do grant funded surveys year after year to determine “what is the cause of these disparities “ but then never implement a solution.

To be fair, not sure how this is UFs problem. Your stories could fit anywhere so not just a Gainesville problem. Rents are up everywhere in the Tampa region the last few years as are most in Florida. To me it seems like both a supply and demand issue related to Covid and the influx of people to an ‘open’ state, as well as inflation related costs.

I own a rental condo and my taxes, insurance, and HOA have all increased substantially the past few years. Unfortunately my tenant has had to cover those costs. I don’t like jacking up the rent but really have no choice other than to lose money.

Love him. Wish he would divert some of the money from our academics to our football and basketball programs to show we are serious about championships like our SEC rivals. We will still be superior academically if we divert even a little bit of funds.

Thanks to those who have discussed real life issues without injecting politics. @thegatorvault is right in that homelessness is sadly an issue almost everywhere. I live in a very rural area of East Tennessee and we have at least 3 camps of homeless people around the outskirts of our small town.

Honestly, I think ‘most’ people can agree on the problems regardless of where you may fall on the political spectrum. The difference usually is if/how the problem should be fixed. That said, I think when you boil things down, people are in agreement a lot of the time. Unfortunately there are ‘powers’ that work to focus us on the disagreements, to separate us for their benefit. Peace and love brothers
