I'm sorry, but this post is total nonsense. Devoe acted like an abusive jackass. I cannot imagine how you came up with this opinion! Maybe you were not born at that time, or maybe you have suffered brain damage since then. Defending Devoe's tenure at UF amounts to GARBAGE!

 

Self is the biggest cheater in college basketball. He was flat out paying players under the table to recruit to Kansas.

Well, my advice to young people has always been, "If you can't get into college, go to Florida State."

 

This has been somewhat predictable. I’ve said it a few times in this thread…it wouldn’t shock me of Riley didn’t play at ku.

 

From everything we know he’s not likely coming back to UF. At this stage are there really any upper tier D1 slots left?

 

Maybe not, but I'm sure there are many D1 teams that would love to have him, and that he would improve. Just needs to lower his sights a little. A smarter move would be to forget about the KUs of the world and sign on with a decent midmajor where he's almost assured a starting role. Forget about the bright lights and the TV and the big NIL. Value the playing time and coaching and getting better.

 

Devoe was awful. I was there for the Sloan-Devoe-Kruger transition. Devoe came in hot like he was starting from scratch with a losing team. It was a terrible approach for a seasoned, winning team and he picked ridiculous battles like the Schintzius hair fiasco. He also complained from the start that he couldn't get the players respect because of the "interim" title. It reeked of a panic hire when Sloan was ousted and they would have been better off pulling an assistant from somewhere.

In retrospect, it sucked for the players and fans at the time, but I'm glad Devoe failed. If he would had even an OK season, he might have been hired long term and set the program on a path to mediocrity.

the entire thing was bizarre. His final 4 included teams that were not pursuing. The KU decision was terrible for all parties, and I figured this outcome possible, if not probable. The good news… he can start over and make a much better choice.

 

We had a kid in 72-73 named bill Moody who was an incredible talent but couldn’t deal with school. Steve Williams told me he saw Moody pumping gas at some little city in the panhandle. I hope Kugel isn’t headed that direction.

Well, maybe you could have actually read the post. Yes, I was on campus at the time. As a member of the hoops band, I attended every home game. And I didn't so much defend Devoe; I just don't get the hand wringing given the circumstances and the fact he was there for only a year. But thanks for the brain damage comment.

 

My hand wringing comes from the fact that his titanic hitting the iceberg year was the only year I got student season tickets .

 

Well, then at least the LSU game made it all worth it. Hope you made it to that one.

 

True story. That game was one of two i think I missed that year. Like I said, that year sucked…
But I did get into the huge Vandy game the year before, they sold single tickets the day before, so that’s the offset.
