I see, in my mind's eye, the great Brooks Robinson, in the 1970 Orioles vs. Reds WS. Brooks made three of these plays in that series, one in the 5th/final game...just in front of the seats my dad had come up with somehow to make a memory for his 10-year old son.
It'll be televised live on ESPNU and it will be available on the ESPN app both live and on demand after the game. ESPN+ doesn't get this one. The Gainesville regional has been done wrong with lack of free live tv. There have been some outstanding games. I expect today to be another one. When the regional was announced, I thought it would be difficult with UConn and Tx Tech being so interchangeable in degree of difficulty. However, I didn't see FAMU giving UF such a tough game. All in all, it has proven to be a strong regional only to be snubbed by ESPN until the regional deciding game.
I grew up and still live in Pensacola. BTW, it's Mickey Mantle. I also watched those Yankee games in the early 60s. Whitey Ford was the ace of the staff. I wonder how a name like that would play out today. (chuckle) Dizzy Dean was the color guy. He was amazing. In all my years of watching baseball, I've never seen a 3rd baseman better than Brooks Robinson. He still remains the ultimate 3rd baseman to me.
I'm 71 so grew up in the heyday of the Mantle Yankees. He & Johnny Unitas we my 2 boyhood heroes. I loved those Yankee teams - Berra, Skowron, Kubek, Richardson, Boyer, Ford, Mantle, Tom Tresh, Al Downing, Arroyo, Terry, etc.
Dizzy Dean, Pee Wee Reese the TV announcers, made any game a blast. Always waiting for Dizzy to release a colorful quip. My dad and I and any others would sit down after a Sunday meal together and watch baseball. Dad, his brothers and Granddad would normally fall asleep at some point, but I would watch all my stars to the end. I lived in Panama City, Quincy, Cross City, Gainseville and eventually Tallahassee. After college Orlando and Boca Raton. Relatives all over the state.
And then there was Kurt Gowdy. He was always good for at least one head scrather comment. IIRC he was the one who said something like "That player's future is ahead of him."
Agree. Dizzy & Pee Wee's main advertiser was Falstaff Beer and I think Dizzy drank a 12 pack or more during the Saturday doubleheader because by the 2nd game he was singing Wabash Cannonball. They both knew their baseball, but they sure had fun talking about it.
I used to listen to Yankee games on a transistor radio in my room-sometimes double headers under the sheets because I was supposed to be in bed asleep! Watched a lot on TV, but Mickey, Yogi, Kubek, Roger etc, etc as mentioned...the glory years for sure. So yesterday and today I listened to the game on WRUF. Kind of brought back memories for me as a kid. After the game I watched all of the highlights. Man, we have a great team. I guess with any team you want the pitching and hitting to be in sync. I didn't see it but heard some of those blunders yesterday. It was nice to work through some of the confusion. Two outs at home plate? Crazy stuff. Very exciting though. Some bad-azz power hitters. Super Regionals? Come on... Very cool. Go Gators.
Lets get all old school here with baseball on the radio. I grew up as a SouthSider in Chicago and loved the 1960's White Sox teams. Our family would usually go to Fort Myers Beach way back then for summer vacation and we could get WMAQ out of Chicago that carried the White Sox games and was a clear channel. If you knew the game and the annoucers were good you could get most of the game via radio. You never could get the actual pitches but back in the days of low res TV you couldn't get it on TV either.
Funny, grew up in FM, winter home of the Pirates (never a fan tho). Played ball in their park, a place where HRs went to die. Never saw a HS kid hit one out. Several inside the parkers tho. One of my first memories as a kid was reading about the Pirates beating the Yankees in the 60 WS in 7 after the Yankees dominated virtually every stat.
My wife was born in Ocala and her Granddad had a dairy farm that is now a housing development The Jensen Dairy is all I know.
Tom Thresh with the hardball on a hard bounce hitting his Adam Apple, never forget seeing him carried off the field.
I toured Jensen's Dairy on a school field trip back in first or second grade. That was back in about 1958 or 1959. I remember they gave us all a small carton of chocolate milk.
I don't go that far back in Ocala. Grew up in Bushnell, went to UF, then to Jacksonville, Green Cove Springs (Lake Asbury), then moved to Ocala in 1998.
Grew up my whole life in Ocala, born in 64. I vaguely remember people talking about Jensen Dairy so sorry I can't add much. I remember in my early years we still had someone deliver milk to our home and they would set the bottles outside our carport door in a little metal 6 pack bottle tote. I'm not sure if that was Borden's or someone from the dairy.
Since I was an Orioles fan staring in the 70s I guess we part ways here. :-D I've enjoyed reading these thread replies and many of us seem from an era long gone these days. I'd often have to turn off my radio, in frustration and/or anxiety, when the O's got behind late in the game. The Baltimore Sun had a front page cartoon in a little box that showed the Oriole mascot doing something happy or sad and the score for the morning Sun so I could know right away how it ended up.
