So we’ve talked a lot about how desantis is absolutely destroying higher ed in Florida. Taking Florida from probably the best state for higher ed and just destroying it. Which is really a waste of taxpayer money cause he spends 5.5 billion a year on it. newest update from Uf admin- hb 999 has a clause indicating that a gen ed course can only be taught if 50% of state universities teach it. Which is crazy because most schools are too small to teach many courses. This will kill 90% of available gen ed courses at university of Florida. Just blowing up the flagship institution of the state. no one really reporting on this. Probably hard when everyone is afraid to go on record for fear of reprisals from the fascists in the desantis admin. don’t need a long thread just a heads up that Florida taxpayers that have funded higher Ed at a higher rate than most states in the union are basically having their money lit on fire as one of our top state exports, education, is being destroyed for purely culture war dumb-shittery
There was some discussion on one satellite radio program about whether or not the bill also killed things like African American Studies and even most black fraternities and sororities. I was not sure if that was just radio talking-head hysteria, because as you say, there has not been much public discussion about the bill at all.
r/ufl has at least two topic threads that students are discussing HB999. Comments are a mixture of apathy, anger, and desire to get out of UF. Sad to see. But voting with ones feet is what DeSantis wants. He likes seeing state school kids give up while his private education rises.
That is a shame. One of the things I didn't really appreciate about UF until after I transferred out was that the gen eds weren't boring cookie cutter classes. I wish more colleges did that instead of just giving every freshman the same comp1 class.
Pretty sad to see happen. Florida is going to more resemble Guatemala within about 20 years, once the boomers start dying off and FL is left with a withering, uneducated population. I sure as heck wouldn’t recommend any young people put down roots in this state. The future is clear, and it ain’t pretty. My theory is this is part of a long play to exploit the natural resources of the state. Dumb down the population as much as possible so there is no resistance to corruption.
30 years ago I took both. Although i think the one i took was called “ the meat we eat”. Also met a super hottie in my exceptional people class when we had to do the volunteer work

It’s a real shame that this legislature has no identity other than what they are told. On this particular issue, I have been assuming that this only applies to the state gen ed courses, of which I believe there are five categories, math, communication, natural science, social science, and humanities. Math and communication shouldn’t be affected here, as those courses are few and very core. There could be some fallout with the other categories, as there is a bit more flexibility in those. Why the state would want to limit student flexibility, I do not know.
It’s a worthwhile debate on eliminating degrees and courses that have limited economic throughout value to the state and taxpayers. I wish there was more debate and analysis that went into it instead of the headlines and focus on CRT / ESG / DEI.
Could be, but I also think it might just be that these people see these moves as so obviously correct that they don’t require input of the actual people affected. Normal big government stuff. I read recently that the USSR implemented a plan ridding society of common weekends to keep factories open 7 days a week. Each citizen was assigned work days and off days that were all staggered from one another. The government didn’t have a motive to gain control here (they already had it!) and seemingly just honestly saw this design as an efficient improvement on society. Of course, the conclusion of this imperious affair only seems too predictable with our modern eyes, but a world in which there was almost no one else with which to spend one’s free days was a terrible world. And yet somehow the elites didn’t see this problem in advance. As Hayek trenchantly observed, “The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design.”
Not so sure that old Soviet govt didn’t have a motive with your “no common weekends” example. Less free time together = less time to lament the sorry state of their lives = less time to plot against the govt. Unless there were former Soviet officials on the record saying “yeah, that was just dumb”, I’d assume it actually had a purpose and it’s purpose was about that sort of control. If slaves are kept busy they don’t have time to plot revolts.
Sasse is MIA. I have friends in admin saying he is lurking in the background but never where anyone can see him other than the occasional baseball game but no strategic plan so far has been made public. he did tell the BOT last meeting that he called around the country and asked 30 higher Ed experts about Uf and they all said Uf is no longer top 5 and might tumble significantly. But that’s it so far.
