    Kentucky is taking a big risk that could seriously blow up in their face with his shoulder issue. Same goes for Notre Dame. That's desperation, not stategy.

    I'm so tired of the "We are the University of Florida" discussion. What does that even mean anymore? We have to compete with every other school for talent and spend money to do so. Schools for the most part are irrelevant in today's world. It's who is willing to spend the money, and who the super-talented kids feel can develop them. Being the "University of Florida" doesn't mean squat to most of these young men.

    Losing Stokes really isn't a loss. He had an awful Senior season, 54% passer with 13 TD/10 INT.

    If that's the case, then why TOUT UF as the 5th best scholastic university? If UF is irrelevant, why not play home games in Paynes Prairie, and declare that as the legitimate Swamp? Besides, isn't Paynes Prairie the true Swamp, where only Gators get out alive? Why not get a coach from Prairie Schoals Community College and pay him $100,000 per year, since kids could care less how much their coach earns per year? Don't tell us Gator fans what you're tired of hearing, because I was an old Gator fan before your parents even joined their loins together to conceive you! It might NOT mean anything to you or perspective students, but it sure as hell will someday!!! Just ask Chris Doering what it means to be from the University of Florida? Hell yeah it matters to be "The University of Florida!!! Hell yeah the Swamp is relevant!!! I HAVE GATOR PRIDE & BELIEVE IN THE ORANGE AND BLUE! If someone wants bought and paid for players, why not sell UF and move to Miami? You said, "Schools for the most part are irrelevant in today's world!" Well, ask fans from Bama, Georgia, or Ole' Miss if their irrelevant? Ole' Miss just got two quarterbacks that some recruiting services thought should come to UF. How the heck does Ole' Miss have more to offer than UF? That's a rhetorical question, don't trouble yourself! If you don't get my point, then you become what's wrong with Gator Nation!!!!!

    Saw this on Twitter just now:

    Can a fresh start at Florida revitalize Graham Mertz's career?

    I'm not an On3 fan, but this article by Nick de la Torre caused me to question myself. I'm usually a person who believes in second and third chances. Admittedly, I have been harboring negativity. I felt like UF didn't go after the best quarterback, and I questioned why. I wondered if Napier was tiptoeimg through the tulips with JR. In all fairness, Nick asks a fair question. I've included Mertz stat history because it influences my thoughts.

    Agreed, even if AR stayed another year, I would have tried to get two QB's out of the portal this year, perhaps one with a year or two of eligibility left, and one with 2 or 3 years of eligibility.

    That’s great and all and I get it. But…… Lagway is coming to play football, not become an engineer. I’d be proud if I had an engineering degree from UF no doubt but that’s not a major factor to football players unfortunately.

    True enough, but how many college players benefit from a good education, regardless of their NFL career?

    Thanks! Great article. Four paragraphs that stood out to me were:

    Wisconsin runs a pro-style, under-center offense. They want to run the football and they don’t care that you know it. Mertz, however, was an entirely different quarterback when he was under center as opposed to in the shotgun or pistol, what Billy Napier’s offense is built on.

    “He was really good in the pistol when they ran it, they just didn’t really run it,” Temple told Gators Online. I think he could have more success doing that at Florida as opposed to under center, running back, the timing and the rhythm were a little off when he had to do that.”

    * * *

    In four years he’s had three coordinators and three quarterbacks coaches, something that certainly won’t do a quarterback any favors. Now, at Florida, he’ll have a head coach that works directly with the quarterbacks. The coach who works with him on a daily basis will also call plays. Last year at Wisconsin, the Badgers had Bobby Engram calling plays. It was the first time in his career that he’d been tasked with that responsibility.

    * * *

    At Florida, he’ll get a dedicated quarterbacks coach in Billy Napier. He’ll have more talent at skill positions than he has prior in his career. As a 22-year-old, three-year starter, it will be on Mertz to come in and win the job.

    I added bold to that last part since I think it's the difference maker.

    We definitely need a QB. I'm sure Napier is not jazzed by the current roster either. But, note that the previous regime's roster is 2/3 gone already. That's a super quick turnover. He's not sitting on his hands.

    Thanks, as I wasn't privileged to that article and those are all solid points. If that proves true, won't Billy look like the genius! Maybe that's why he gets paid the big bucks?

    Relax Doc. First off, I doubt you're that much older than me if at all, and my parents were going to Gator games in the mid 50's so stop with the "before your parents..." BS. I didn't say UF didn't mean anything to me. And I said schools have become irrelevant to many of the young men looking to play college ball, not UF specifically. That is a fact my friend. You mentioned Chris Doering, a great Gator by the way. That was almost 30 years ago. Today's recruits, in many ways, don't view education or playing ball for a school the same way young men did back in the 90's. Again, fact. So, spare me the diatribe.

    I grew up a Gator fan, attended ball games as a kid, graduated from UF, and have spent the better part of 41 years attending games at the Swamp. I am as much a fan as anyone, but this idea that kids will be drawn to UF because of our past success, athletically and scholastically, is old and tired. We haven't been relevant in football, minus one year, since 2009. How many 4/5* kids we're recruiting gives a damn about UF being 5th scholastically? The bottom line is we are competing against Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, just to name a few. They have no problem spending money on coaches, players and facilities. We're making up ground but we're not there yet. But the ground we have lost and need to make up certainly isn't going to happen just because we are the University of Florida. We are owed nothing. The past is the past. UF needs to make up its mind what it wants with regard to football, and how much it is willing to pay to compete. Fact.

    Depends what they have upstairs. Mizells mom came back and got her masters so it’s great for her. Many though just don’t really belong in a classroom at all so the education part is not really valuable to them.
