An Attempt at a Broadly Balanced Look at the Recruiting Class

Arguing over the "top 20" is mostly pointless because there are so many different sites now with their own rankings, it's almost impossible to identify who the "top 20" in the state are. To me, the biggest cons are without a doubt, the lack of DT's, OL depth and LB's.

-- Missing on every single one of Walker, Hall, McLeod and McDonald is horrible. Don't care what the circumstanes were, land one. Will Norman is good, but he should not be the only true DT in the class. Have to hit the portal really hard here, Banks isn't enough. Can't have little-to-no rotation up the middle in 2023 like we did this year. Depth is critical and we don't have it, nor was it addressed in this class.

-- LB recruiting as been bad from the start and while Robinson looks to have promise, he wasn't really even playing LB in high school, so he's got a long development curve ahead. Again, this is going to have to be addressed in the portal badly.

-- Kearney was a good get for the interior and will likely see the field fairly soon, but there's no one else in this class who, right now, you can really see forcing his way onto the field in the next 1-2 years. The lack of a big tackle prospect is glaring.

REALITY? 90% of gator 'fans' (including wives, younger members of families, old geezers who yell at kids to sit down in the west stands during games) couldn't name 5 kids who committed a day ago.

These kids are still drinking milk out of a carton in HS. Let's see what spring game does for actual athletes.

For now, I am happy for the commitments because they are gators. That's good enough for me.

Quick! tell me the exact ratings for the lower 5 of this Gator class of 2023, off the top of you head. You can'd do it can you?

 

The numbers are currently not adequate, and BN doesn't have the play-calling ability to make up for talent deficiencies. I'm hoping he kills it in the portal. Hopefully a decent QB enters the portal after their bowl game.

 

Only play call i'm tired of seeing from Billy is that jet sweep with Hendo lol. I didn't mind it the last two game of the years when it involved Pearsall but when it was Hendo, it made NO sense lol.

 

And the orbit motion. Seems like we're telling them "we're going to try to do this with only 10 players".

 

I remember in 2021 we were mad as a fan base that Dan never used the jet sweep and then we get it this past season but it was with the least shifty WR lol. Can't make this stuff up

 

The standard was championships. Last one was soon to be 15 years ago.

We've bottomed out, so to expect us to do something we haven't done in 15 years in short order is unrealistic. It will take 4-5 seasons to possibly get there if Billy's plan comes to fruition.

If after 3 years, we decide he can't get the job done, then start the clock over again.

It's repeating cycle.

I have confidence that he can recruit a lot better than our last two coaches. I'm pretty sure he'll be a better CEO than Chump. Will that be enough? Hard to say. We're up against it folks and the odds are not in our favor.

 

As much as some yall complain, we could sign the #1 class and yall would still be bitching about us losing a recruit. Step away from the ledge and smoke some weed. Life will go on.

Chicken/egg hypothesis. How can we get better on the field without talent ? How can we get talent without getting better on the field? Portal. Like right now

 

Nape has to do better in Florida. He really needs to take a hard look at his staff, and get some people on board with connections in Florida.

 

Ask Mario Cristobal or Kirby Smart when he first started at Georgia, and it works both ways.

Though winning doesn't hurt, it doesn't necessarily result in good recruiting AND you don't need to necessarily win in order to recruit well.

Mullen's tenure convinced me of that. Mullen won before he had the talent, yet it never materialized into good recruiting. Kirby looked incredibly shaky in game management his first year, but ALWAYS recruited at an elite level. It looks like Cristobal will have a similar deal, whether it will be to the same level of success as Smart is still a question, though.

As the largest state university in Florida, we need to get our fair share of top players, just saying. Interestingly, Clemson’s pipeline to Florida seems to disappear after Jeff Scott left, time to hire Scott on our staff?

 

maybe Wilson or Mizell can bring some excitement to that play

 

It has been shown over and over that results on the field don’t matter in the early years of a coaches tenure.

Most recent example …Miami was 5-7 and a disaster on the field - signed 3 of top 20 in Florida and #4 class.

an underrated thing that goes to show you about the player evals is that we haven't had a Napier commit from the 2022 class leave. I want to say darn near every team has a had at least one player from their 2022 class hit the portal but not UF. That goes to show you that they've bought in
