You are putting forth Nicky’s argument he developed over Thanksgiving dinner. Vegas had the following predictions:

Alabama vs. Tennessee spread: Crimson Tide -9

Alabama vs. LSU spread: Alabama -13.5

They aren’t always right. The “best” team should not determined by the odds makers. The idea that the championship should include someone’s notions of best teams is artificial. It should be who deserves to be there based on body of work. Many a tournament is won by teams or people who are not “the best” in oddsmakers’ minds.

Actually, @tilly goes to Saban's Thanksgiving Dinner for us. He may have let it slip though . . .

Like I said before, your argument is very valid as are others. I'll just be happy when the 2024 format gets started. That's when I think we'll see some upsets like the NCAA Tournament and like you're talking about.

For what it's worth Ohio State doesn't deserve to be there. You can't lose to your rival at home in the only real game you play all year by 3 touchdowns and get to claim you are a top 4 team in the country.

That said, I hope Georgia beats the brakes off OSU.

Point spreads have more to do with public perception than anything else. They usually align with team strength, but do not clearly show the best team.

To the playoff field, I think the committee got it right. There was no way to satisfy everyone when they essentially had three teams eligible for two spots. It's kinda weird to read Gator fans arguing for Alabama.

If Georgia were not involved, you wouldn’t see it. Speaking for self, the only scenario I would cheer for Georgia is if they were playing SWAC. I can’t stand Alabama, but the choice between them and Georgia is no choice at all. Alabama is a team that could conceivably compete with and beat Georgia. Sorry to be blunt, but TCU is not. I would rather they took their “atta boy” game somewhere that it doesn’t give a stronger team an easier route to the championship game.

Roger that, but we're not arguing Bama vs. Georgia. Folks are arguing that Bama deserves to be in the playoff . . . Gator folks. Aren't y'all sick as sin of Bama? I know I said they belong in the conversation, but once they're out, they're out. I'm not gonna bellyache it. Not saying that you are.

The point is moot now, because the Committee has already gifted TCU the third spot despite their loss. But, yes, I’m plenty sick of Bama. Now ask if me if I’m even more sick of Georgia at the moment.

Maybe not, but they deserve the chance. Alabama had their chance, and they blew it. If Alabama had won even one more game they would be in, but they didn’t.

This is one of the things that has always bothered me about team selection, even going back to when it was just the BCS Championship: is it supposed to be the “best” team or the “most deserving” team? It seems to go back and forth as convenient. In 2011, we are told that Alabama (which did not even win its division, much less its conference) must be the team, because it was the best available, even though Oklahoma State was clearly the more deserving team. So fine. Then the next year rolls around, and there are at least five teams clearly better than Notre Dame, but now we must allow Notre Dame anyway because they are the most deserving.

I’m not the biggest fan of the NFL, but at least they know what the rules are in advance for getting into their playoff or not.

I agree with this. I did not think that Alabama should’ve gotten back in 2011. There was also the year that Nebraska lost its conference championship game but still played for the national championship.

This is why I always laughed at those who claimed that the whole season was a playoff system, because too many times teams would lose their last game of the season, or not win their conference, or even not win their division in a conference, but they would still get to play for the national championship.

I also always laughed at the argument against a playoff that it would create too many games, which would be bad for the student athletes, but somehow the lower divisions manage to have playoffs without harming anyone.

Unlike a lot of others, I want to see Georgia repeat. I'd like to keep the title in the SEC.

And I like that Bennett has overcome a lot of adversity to become the best 85 year old college QB.

Edit - If TCU can't win it, that is. I prefer TCU because of Duggan, but don't think they can win it.

Probably already mentioned, but the committee did a great job in protecting their TCU pick by keeping them at #3. If they put them at #4, Georgia destroys them and it's a bad look. Rather than root for Georgia because of the SEC, I'm good with just rooting against TCU to (hopefully) exploit the over-hype over the Big 12 (my opinion); and if TCU can win, I'll tip my cap to them and have no problem with admitting I was wrong about them. Personally, I don't think the Big 12 is as good as others think they are. Looking at the top 6 teams, their best out of conference win was arguably Missouri; one of the worst teams in the SEC (6th in the East). In my view, they have a stronger SOS because they only played 3 OOC opponents.

I think there are some flaws to Sagarin's evaluation. He has the Big 12 as the best overall conference. Kind of odd considering none of the top half of the conference have a top 50 Sagarin win outside of conference play (Missouri at #51 is their best win).
