We’ve had a handful of coaches in the last few years in college football try and out “Alabama”- Bama- attention to detail, get 5 stars, nothing flashy- just be tougher and better. Nobody has succeeded but Georgia. Georgia is raking in 5- stars, suffocating defense, running a ton of 12 personnel, bunch sets, good run game and just crushing your spirit. Georgia is now the team to beat.
To win that way- without a ton of schemes and style- you have to lineup 5 Stars EVERYWHERE. The coaches that have beaten Saban have done it with schemes- (phenomenal- dynamic QBS usually-) but schemes. And it was one offs -not sustainably. Freeze, Malzahn, Heupel… those dudes have done it by just out foxing you. The guys that have won at Florida have done it largely by out scheming you- Spurrier, Meyer /Mullen spread… sure, those guys had amazing talent too but largely it was scheme.
What CBN is trying has NEVER been done here and rarely anywhere else over the past 15 years. That’s “beat you with talent over scheme year after year and be a perennial contender “. To line up in 2 TE’s and go 60/40 run takes a ton of talent. To win without a mind like Reilly, Heupel, Kiffen etc on the sideline takes 5 stars at every position and a super accurate QB.
Idk… it worries me. If it works, for the next 4-5 years, we are loading up on 5 stars and top 3 classes and we knock off Georgia and Bama and are in contention. If we have top 15 classes or top 10 classes - we win a ton but prolly not against Georgia/Bama and occasionally get out foxed by smarter dudes in-game by guys like Heupel, Norvell, Freeze, Kiffen etc…. It’s a calculated risk. So far we are not out dueling LSU, Bama, Georgia, Ohio St etc…. I keep hearing “it’s gonna take a lot of time”…. I hope in the meantime CBN is smart enough to know he’s gonna have to create an edge somewhere to close that gap.

Georgia has two future NFL tight ends that start for them. Bowers is their version of Kyle Pitts and Washington might be a first rounder if he wasn't playing with Bowers. He will probably be picking in the first three rounds when he goes to the NFL. Georgia does have the depth at basically every position to keep their program at a top 5 level if if they continue to recruit and develop players the way they've done so far.

People seem to forget that it’s NIL for everyone now, and not just the usual suspects who have had that (wink, nudge) “system” in place for some time already. :D o_O

Since the scholarship limit is high enough to permit stockpiles of 4 and 5 star players and there is no draft (or good reason there shouldn't be) perhaps the expansion of playoffs where only conference or divisional champions can participate will help even out the talent gap.

We’re not going to get to the level of these UGA teams.

I’ve said it before but we need a collective effort from all the historically top teams to each raise their games and bring UGA and the truly top teams back to the pack. We need us, FSU, Tennessee, Texas, USC, etc to all chip away at the big dogs and keep all the 5-stars from going to the same schools. If UGA was only getting three 5-stars each cycle instead of five we might start to have a chance.

  6. Billy Napier intends to beat other teams with scheme, but he needs a certain level of talent to make it work. Here is what he said back in January:
Some say the scheme used in 2022 looked like a high school offense and defense, but whom do we blame—the scheme, the coaching, or the players? We should blame all of them. The coaches can choose to adjust the scheme and chalk it up to the SEC learning curve. The schemes could be updated for today’s environment. The players can only “do better” so much before they tap out on ability.

Uga has always been great at recruiting and I don't see that stopping with KS. If you're going to beat uga, you have to have at least equal talent. Time will tell if BN can do that. What will hurt uga is what has hurt bama and that is other schools poaching their coaches. However, uga has the money and will to find the best available coaches just like bama has.
To beat a team like uga with lesser talent you have to have a great qb and a great scheme.

And you can pull that off maybe once in 5 or 6 seasons.

Discipline and heart. What I believe are two key components to CBN’s strategy.

Meyer had UGA level talent. After Meyer I think the administration lost its taste for what it takes to attract And keep that talent.

CBN also has to look at his asst coaches as subordinates and NOT friends. If one of them isn't doing the job, replace them.

Keep in mind that when Bama was really good on defense, it was Kirby running that defense. I always expected that to happen at Georgia, the question was, could Kirby find a quality OC.

Recruits flock to UGA because (example: last year 15 players went to the no-fun-league). Young players all think they can play in the nfl and when they see so many UGA players getting drafted they'll continue to go to Georgia.

The transfer portal changes all of this.

I think UF has to play the long game here. It sucks but NIL and transfer portal are still very new obstacles that require some adjustment. It’s gonna be NFL level team building.

Its all about recruiting but its unlikely that any team is going to out recruite UGA or bama so coaching and scheme are still really important. That being said Kelly is probably a much better game day coach than smart, the result from last night was about roster talent.

Smart is not a great game day coach. He may not even be at the “very good” level. For them it’s all about talent.

To the OPs original post he makes some very good points, but Pell/Hall won at Florida with basically the same Saban model.

Smart has been the beneficiary over the last five years of Mullen/Florida, Muschamp/SC, Pruitt/UT, and Hardin/AU. The pathetic recruiting of those these coaches sent more than a few kids to UGA. Even Dabo’s recruiting dropped a couple of notches. All of these programs need to recruit better and that will take players from UGA.

So your latest gem to take a shot at CBN is... we hired a dummy. Norvell and co. are all "smarter" than CBN. And you know this because you can ascertain football IQ by osmosis.. The more i read of what you write, the more i believe you are a troll.

The way LSUs back up QB (I don’t care if he’s a former 6 star recruit) could come in at the half and run a quick passing game/hurry up offense against one of the best defenses I’ve seen in a long time was impressive. Georgia was blitzing even in the 4th qtr.
Kelly should be SEC Coach of the year imo.
