This one is legit. I don’t buy much gas but I burn this up for the restaurant deals.

Im on my second AMEx Gold, first was personal second business. Generally I prefer cash awards because I’m not in position to travel much now.

Having an EIN can be pretty handy for some of these business cards or bank accounts. You don’t always need one but sometimes it helps. They are easy to get from IRS. I usually get biggest bonuses from Business cards and accounts.

picked up close to 800k amex MR points this year, paid for our flights to/from Europe this summer with quite a few left over. I stockpile all currencies so I can find best option when we do need tickets. daughter is in school in London so virgin atlantic miles from MR points helps with those tickets

discount travel options here. buy free hotel night certificates for Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Hyatt, even get paid for letting others book your hotel room in their name so they get credit for nights stayed, buy companion passes for airline tickets, etc

We use the AMEX Delta skymiles card. We build miles pretty freaking fast.

that is good but nothing builds balances like bonuses. if I'm not working on a minimum spend I know I am cheating myself. And no, it doesn't hurt your credit. Between "business" and personal cards, I usually get 6 - 12 credit cards a year on average to cover airfare and hotel bills when possible. More if I have big items I have to buy. spend some on annual fees but cards I keep are worth annual fee due to free night each anniversary. $95 fee gets me cert for free nights that I have used to book rooms for UF games.

I have 2 chase ink cash already. I’ve kept them because they give 5% on phones and a few other things. I’ve also done the preferred a couple of times and unlimited.

I only have brief windows with chase where I am under 5/24. Last year after a few years of doing credit cards was the first time I got under 5/24 in 3 years. I opened a couple of chase cards but now I’m back over again. I’m approaching the point where I have hit a lot of the major ones and will probably soon scale back again. Between upfront credit card and bank bonuses I’ll hit around $8,000 this year. That doesn’t include the ongoing spending rewards. Between the two I’ll get close to $10k this year.

US bank has had some pretty good cash bonus deals in cards. It’s near impossible to open up a bank account with them.

And mostly all tax free. I just fell under 5/24 threshold myself since they implemented that rule. Been feasting on amex biz cards without the lifetime language and BOA Alaska biz cards. Hawaiin biz card for 75k miles netted 3 pairs of Maui Jim sunglasses for xmas gifts. 25k/ MJ cert and get any MJ glasses for cert. Over $1k in sunglasses

What's the 5/24 threshold you guys are mentioning?

I've never chased miles, but always focused on cash rewards. I'm on track for about $3k this year.

Chase will not approve new cards if you have over 5 new personal accounts within 24 months.

Same. The problem with miles is that their value can change when the corporate entity wants to change them.

Earn em and burn em. They can certainly depreciate and AA shut me down and took 800k + miles I had built up. Citibank sent me offers, I met terms, got miles, then AA went on a purge and closed all AA accounts that had earned more than 3 bonuses in 24 months. Still don't understand how that was legal when citi bought miles from AA and gave them to me and I only used them for me or immediate family. I know I was one of tend of thousands they closed and likely wiped millions of $$ worth of liability off their books.

I don't have a job where that's always possible, so I'd rather just collect the cash rewards.

I struggle using my miles these days. I have close to 600k between AA and Chase. With young kids my traveling options are somewhat limited.

Yeah. You can literally book the same flight and the mileage value is all over the map.

Correct. Not that different than using cash cheap today, 2x as much next week. It's why you get best value booking ahead. You can also get big differences depending on what miles you use. I used air france milesvto fly wife home from London on Delta metal. Deltavwanted 185k miles for same seat I got for 57.5k air france miles.

Using avios on short AA flights is great value. Caribbean, Costa Rica, Belize we use avios to book AA flights.
