The players don’t give up. Immediate transformation in that regard

Not my opinion but one that carries a little more weight...

After the FSU loss, Miller reflected on coach Billy Napier and his first year at Florida.

“Like Coach Nape said, I know we didn’t win as much games this year, but this had to be one of my favorite years since I’ve been here,” Miller said.

Napier’s emphasis on people is what the program is built on. Miller echoed that sentiment as he likely put the cleats on for the last time at the college level.

“Just the brotherhood we just built throughout the time. Like I said, that’s something Coach Napier just emphasized, you can just see how the brotherhood has grown throughout the year and it’s been a great time.”

Although year one wasn’t what Gator fans wanted, Miller has faith in Napier’s vision for the program.

“I’m very confident just to see what comes next,” Miller said. “Those guys are trying to continue to learn and get better and look for ways to put us in better positions. So like I said, those guys in the locker room, those are real competitors and I feel good about the direction of the program.”

Ventrell Miller thankful for his time at Florida, reflects on FSU loss

I'm a big a critic of Billy as any, but this can't be denied. The players play for him. That's something we haven't seen in a while.

We will see something of the matter by the number of opt-outs for our bowl. If there are as many as Mullen had against Oklahoma, then that will suggest the culture has not changed much.

    I disagree. Apples and oranges.

I do agree with what others said though . . . and imagine that same unity with 4/5-star Napier players at most or every position.

How not? An organization with a strong culture wants to compete. CBN should understand that bowl games matter, and winning bowl games matters. If he understands that, then he will make the team understand that, too. And if they do, then the last place any of them will want to be is home watching it while they should be on the field. And that is especially true if we get lined up with UCF again (as I have just read is possible). The shame of that inexcusable loss last year should absolutely motivate them to play. And if it doesn’t, then CBN has more work to do.

Here are the guys that won't be playing in the bowls:
    1. Guys who are going pro
    2. Guys who are transferring

As much as I would love for the NFL guys to play, if they are high round draft pick, chances are they won't be playing unless we are in the college playoffs or something. That would be the same with no matter who's wearing the visor.
As for the guys transferring...cya. Leave the practice reps for the guys who are staying.

Well for one thing, nobody cares about bowls for 6-6 teams. Risking a possible career ending injury as a potential high draft pick just to play in the "who gives a shit bowl" against another team coming off a failed season is a very poor business decision. Welcome to 2022.
Second, there will be many players entering the portal shortly. Why would Billy want those players taking practice and game reps from players who will be here next season?

I’m with you on the transfers only. Sorry you feel that way about our bowl. I hope our coaching staff has a different philosophy than you do when it comes to this game. Because the other team probably will come to play.

Billy Napier is a stand up, no nonsense, do it the right way, organized, and visioned kind of HC. He is a great family man. He walks the talk for all the right things. I am damn glad he is our HC.

I believe he has the humility to fix what is wrong. He doesn't have a God Complex like many, but he tolerates no acting the fool nonsense.

This is The Man, my brothers and sisters. We are on our way.

So, if changing a culture means building team unity, fighting hard for each other, not giving up when being down and no finger pointing when losses mount then I understand. The thing is, generally speaking, isn't that what happens with any new coach who takes over a team where their coach is fired especially mid season? Regroup the troops. Team building. Teaching how to face adversity for usually a new coach has been left with a mess.

BN is a character builder and I so appreciate that. Just personally speaking, I'd love him to change the culture of players mugging for the crowd/cameras every time they make a good play. We could be losing by a lot and someone makes a tackle for a loss and here comes the he man strut. If one is to celebrate, celebrate with the team.
The other (pet peeve) is the baton. I hate it. I feel the same way when other teams do it and again to me its not a team thing but a me thing, hey, I made a big play. I ran for a TD. Well yes, but who blocked? Who rushed the passer so you could get the int. Maybe I'm just getting old.

There's a pretty significant difference between fams thinking players opting out of a meaningless bowl isn't a big deal and the current staff and players not trying to win. So yeah, I'm pretty sure the staff isn't gonna approach the game with a "nobody cares" attitude.

So back to the moral of the story. If AR declares and opts out of the bowl, it says absolutely nothing about Napier's culture-building.

I never mentioned AR. One or two opt-outs won’t bother me. A whole army of opt-outs like what happened in 2020 will bother me and reflect, in my opinion, a cultural problem now like it did then.

What said a lot more about the culture was Mullen not even using all of the allotted practices.
And it wasn't a whole army of opt outs. It was 2 first rounders, a potential high pick in Grimes, and Marco Wilson.

Agree with you there. And it wasn’t like he couldn’t practice because he was too busy recruiting. Further, his “meh, whatever” attitude in the post-game press conference after he had just gotten bent over by Oklahoma was all many of us needed to know.

On your other point, Pitts was the only one who had any business opting out. Not because it was a meaningless game. It wasn’t. But because he had already taken a concussion earlier in the season. The balls on Marco Wilson, though. Don’t tell me the staff shouldn’t have sat him down privately and given him a talking to about not going out like that.

Finish the thread first. Already said I wasn’t talking about transfers.
