Katie Hobbs is suing Cochise County for refusing to certify the election results by the deadline. The irony in this is that if Hobbs allows the Republicans to continue acting like fools by not certifying the election results, they would cost the Republican Party two different races it won.
Katie Hobbs to Sue GOP-Controlled Arizona County Refusing to Certify the Election
GOP-controlled Arizona county refuses to certify 2022 midterm election results
State Elections Director Kori Lorick wrote in a letter last week that Hobbs is required by law to approve the statewide canvass by next week and will have to exclude Cochise County's votes if they aren't received in time.

That would threaten to flip the victor in at least two close races — a U.S. House seat and state schools chief — from a Republican to a Democrat.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
Basically, Democrats like Hobbs are choosing democracy over the party's potential gains. And I applaud it.

To be devils advocate, if State law requires certification by a passed deadline, how can you count the votes and certify late? Isn’t state law sacrosanct, even if it disenfranchises voters? Can’t change the law after the election? Imagine this on a national scale— refusal to certify votes in time for the electoral college and then the 1-6 meeting of the Congress. Hobbs is obviously right.

Maybe I was too Phoenix-centric and Phoenix-focused when I lived in Arizona in the late 1990's and early 2000's, but all of the people I lived around, worked around and socialized with were never this stinking crazy. Everyone I knew out there was a Republican, but they were never subversive nor insane.

What in the world has happened to Arizona?

I lived in Tucson from 2004-2010. Republicans I knew were nowhere near this crazy. Apparently Trumpitis is a very powerful disease.

If I recall correctly, this was the issue in Gore v Bush. The Fla. Secretary of State confirmed the election even though the Florida Supreme Court expressly allowed the recount. The US Supreme Court, in a ruling that to this day I believe was corrupt, held that because the election was certified, there could be no recount (even though the State’s highest court authorized the recount).

Didn’t the Democrats complain that Russia stole the 2016 election ?

On one hand, it really does seem like he is the singular cause for this insanity, and it's baffling that someone that ignorant and buffoonish could have that kind of influence.
But I suppose the powder keg of resentment, anger and budding insanity was already there and just needed a match. And he was it.

You mean that Donald Trump would really win the 2020 election and that it would be stolen from him through massive fraud? Who would have thought. To refresh your memory even in 2016 Trump was claiming that the only way he could lose the election would be through (obviously fictional) voter fraud and even though he actually won the election thanks to the EC he claimed that he also won the popular vote.
This was after Trump had won the election in 2016.

The Democrats complained about Russian interference in the election campaign. Unlike Trump and his sheep-like supporters following the 2020 election, they never complained that the official vote count tabulated by the states wasn't reflective of the actual vote.
By the way, this was Hillary Clinton less than 24 hours after the polls closed in 2016. We haven't seen anything similar from Trump regarding the 2020 election and never will.

Both Senators are democrats, and Hobbs did defeat her fruitcake opponent. The crazies are a minority there and elsewhere, but the crazies dominate the press.

Well, the good news is that there are just enough sensible people in the state to elect a senator, governor, and AG who aren't election-denying crazies.

I am too lazy to look it up now, but if I recall, Cochise is down south on the border with Mexico. It is probably where the Patriot Movement started, or at least had a high profile presence. A ton of anti-immigration hatred to tap into down there, which I suppose aligns with Trumpism. I understand that little hole in the ground.

I just do not understand the rest of the state. As other have pointed out, many Californians have moved to AZ starting in the early to mid-1990's as the state became more and more liberal, and the Mormons lost some political sway over the state. Maybe they are angry too at the loss of political influence in the state. Who knows?

Just sad though. Florida, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Texas, Arizona and Tennessee are the places I have lived in (no particular order), I would live in Arizona in a heartbeat...if not for the public crazies out there these days.

Cochise is the SE corner of Arizona. Some really cool places, like Bisbee, an old copper mining town with the Copper Queen Hotel, frequented by John Wayne many times back in the day, and supposedly haunted. Sonoita is home to Arizona wine country, and one of the oldest grape growing regions in the US, home to about 15 wineries. And of course, Tombstone, the Town too Tough to Die. Guess democracy isn't too tough to die, however.

Tucson is a college town and liberal. Phoenix used to be solid red, but as more and more Californians moved in, the metro area slowly turned purple. The younger generation is a lot more left leaning as well, and voting more than previous young generations. And while there still is a large LDS population in Mesa/Gilbert suburbs East of Phoenix, the Mormons aren't big Trump fans.

The old R Guard in the rural areas are not too happy that Phoenix has turned purple enough that Ds are now winning statewide elections. The rural Arizonans have always feel disconnected from Phoenix, much in the same way rural Californians have nothing to do with LA or San Francisco. But before 2020, at least their party was in power in the state. Now? Not so much. It's caused a lot of resentment and frustration, and when leaders like Trump and Lake tell them it's only happened because of fraud, their desire to believe takes over, and they believe it, to their core, despite a complete and total lack of evidence.

As for Cochise County, the far right, lead by Bannon who has been sowing the seeds of doubt in Arizona for months, want the chaos. If they can't win the election, they want nobody to win, and everything to go to the courts. And even though if Cochise doesn't certify, it means a D wins a House seat and a D would win Secretary of Education, I hope the Democrats take the high road here. Even if the county doesn't certify, the will of the people should and democracy is more important.

I think what he did was prove that you could get away with simply refusing to concede and accept electoral results. When he didn't immediately get pushed back, that provided a proof of concept, which will survive even after he is gone, although the preference is still to perform suppression on the front end
