I get it, I really do. You're really upset that there's a thread about some conservatives acting like immature idiots and you want to make it clear that you don't think anyone should be talking about it.
We've seen it before and we'll see it again.

Actually it seems to me he was refuting the theme put forth by the OP and then pushed by others here that the few fools who open carry all over the place are representative of the Pub party as a whole. Seems to me like that’s what he is at odds with.

Talking about a few jackasses is great, but making broad statements to try to make it about an entire party is a fail.

DeSantis promised a while ago that we will have open carry in Florida during his term in office. I can’t wait. It will be so great to walk around downtown Tampa knowing that the guys walking around with long guns are there to protect me. It also should be great for tourism.

I'm sorry I hurt your feelings. It wasn't my intent. I wasn't painting with a broad brush. I was careful with my words. Which is why I said "I'm not speaking about Republicans as a whole obviously. Just the ones that play dress up." I hope you have a good rest of your day.

I own one gun and it hasn't been fired since WII. I grew up in the south so I know a lot of gun owners. I am in my 60s. I have never personally known anyone who had an accident, suicide or used a gun in a crime. I resent the OP trying to smear all of the gun owners I have known. There is no correlation between the dozens of people I've known and the nuts you describe. You might as well argue, assuming they are all male, that since some males act this way all males are that way. You and the right wingers who think like you, demonize the other side and for God's sake don't listen to them, are the problem. You are why we don't make progress.

I’d almost be willing to guess the OP owns a gun. I’ll bet he owns two.

I'm not saying you're referring to my post, but for the record I did say "I'm not speaking about Republicans as a whole obviously. Just the ones that play dress up.." Most posters aren't labeling the Republican party as a whole in the comments so far. The majority of the posts are aimed at the few jackasses you mentioned. The post I quoted and commented on was directly speaking to the people who meet in large groups at rallies brandishing guns. To be clear that was the only group I was addressing.

I own many guns. I also used to be a registered Republican before I went Independent. I'm very very far from being anti-gun and I am not totally anti Republican. I'm mainly against the cult faction of the party.

Just another lib thread proclaiming moral superiority over others, using a few bad examples to project on millions of law-abiding and good people. Just so they can thump their chest on a message board and feel morally superior. This isn’t a discussion. It’s a “hey look I’m morally superior and you should be ashamed.”

I’m a huge proponent of owning a gun and being able to carry it “concealed” in public. My past posts prove it.

The one area I think needs to be visited is open carry in public. I just don’t think that’s a good idea. If you want to carry do it concealed.

That would make it difficult to carry a long gun on your person. Have one in your vehicle if you choose.

I agree with you. I live in an open carry state in a dinky town full of retirees and it’s weird trying to adjust to seeing so many guns openly displayed. Every trip to WalMart I see very old geezers, some using walkers, with guns on their hips. I shudder to think how erratic their aim might be if they felt compelled to use it. Have yet to see anyone open carrying a long gun yet.

A few weeks ago I went to an organizational meeting of Toys for Tots - roomful of about 30 older Americans and 2 were open carrying. I don’t share whatever fears cause people to do this and so I don’t understand why they do.

Despite my opinions though, the trend across the country seems to be more states making it legal and I don’t see it subsiding anytime soon.

I think there’s a lot to what you said. But it’s also true that such groups have members that are current or at least former cops and military. I worry about those guys a bit more.

I agree 100% and that is where I object to the way this thread started out....It is not a discussion on open carry but rather a discussion on right wing extremist. I guarantee if you polled right wingers a majority would be against open carry. Gun ownership is a different story but to try to paint the right as wanting the USA to look like Dodge City is way off base.

I could be wrong but I dont think the OP was intending to claim all Republicans are for open carry. He attached links about those that show up to rallies in full force and armed to the teeth. I thought the focus was on that

From my perspective open carry is not simply a right wing thing. It is a societal issue that crosses all boundaries regardless of political belief. Concealed carry crosses all boundaries of political belief as well. At a minimum open carry at least alerts the populace to a potential danger rather than the rattle snack hiding in the grass. That said American culture has traded the west for the streets of crime ridden metropolitan areas.

    This thread is hilarious.

The Pubs on here are trying to distance themselves from the nuts by claiming they are just some small minority that are looking for open carry.

And yet, open carry is the law of the land in 30 states.

Amazing how powerful that small minority is.

When is the last time you saw someone carry a gun into a 7-11 openly in any state? Just because a state is an open carry state on paper does not mean you can strap a 44 on your side and walk into Walmart. If you do you had better have a damn good reason.

Gun reform is a 70% issue. This means most republicans aren’t gun nuts, and nobody has suggested owning a single gun makes one a gun nut (a rather bizarre assertion to lump yourself with gun nuts in such a way).

But there is an issue here. While clearly not all Republican voters are gun nuts (maybe not even 50% of actual people), nearly 100% of Republican politicians cave to the nuts on this issue.

It’s kind of like abortion in that way. Another 70% issue where most people agreed with the Roe vs. Wade status quo, but that hasn’t stopped the nutty elements of the party to go “all the way” or attempt extreme - almost Gestapo-like restrictions - against women in some of the red states.
